Penncrest Dominates Environmental Awareness - Wins Envirothon for the 20th consecutive time!

Congratulation to Penncrest for winning yet another Delaware County Envirothon title. This competition tests area high schools in their knowledge of five environmental sciences with the winner advancing to the state finals.

Penncrest is no newcomer to the state and national scene when it comes to this category.  They've gone on to win the national North American Environthon in 2000, 2005 and 2009.  Here's a great story by delcotimes.com

Great Job!

Walk for the Wounded Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Rose Tree Park

If you do but one thing this weekend, make sure you swing by Rose Tree Park on Saturday to check out the Walk for The Wounded event.  This is not only a popular event attended by a host of well known area sponsors, but also includes car shows, food, military hardware and great stories by the many veterans who participate.

In addition to a walk and 5k run, there's also a motorcycle warrior escort that starts out in Glen Mills and rides over 200 strong to the event.  You might see me in that line-up on Saturday and if you're interest too, here's the link to find out more.

Thanks to everyone who puts this together! Each year this gets bigger and bigger and is becoming the area's most attended event.

Media in Two Minutes

Media in Two Minutes

ATM SPOTLIGHT:A special THANKS to the Penncrest Interact Club and the Media Rotary for their clean-up work this weekend at Media's Glen Providence Park.

Media VFW Sunday Breakfast Today 8:30 to 11:30am
The last Sunday of every month the local Media VFW has their very popular breakfast.  Check it out! For $7 all you can eat, it's one of the best deals around too.  They have excellent made to order omelets that are worth the admission.

Media gets new Parking Ticketing System.
I know this, because I go one.  If you receive a parking ticket, you'll now notice a white receipt included with the yellow envelope.  Before, the infraction was written on the envelope.  Still no way to pay these via a website.

Media Pizza Gets It!
If you're in the pizza business, one statistic worth paying attention to is the fact that more and more people are using mobile apps to order food.   The average percentage of people ordering pizza online is about 40%.  What creates an advantage is that restaurants can customize coupon offers directly within the app.  No need to search the mail on your kitchen table for local offers.  Also what's neat, specials could be offered if say the Flyers score two goals in the second period, like hopefully today.

Kudos to Media Pizza for their forward thinking and an app definitely worth checking out.

Media Rugby
Despite their loss yesterday in the regional championship, Media Rugby is doing some great things which includes a tremendously loyal following.  I can't get halfway down State Street without someone asking me what can be done about a home field.  Well, I think I may just have the solution for that which would work really well for the Fall season.

Help Tom Raise Money for Delco's Walk for the Wounded
County Council Chair, Tom McGarrigle will be in town today at Campbell's Boat House to raise money for the Delco Walk for the Wounded Fund.  Tom will be guest bartender with all the tips going to this great cause.  Event goes from 2 - 5pm today (4/27).

International Flair at Jack's Tavern
If you want to go out to drink Ouzo and smoke cigars,  there's not many places this side of the Mediterranean that you can do that inside a bar, but there is one that I know of here in Media and that's Jack Tavern.  It's a far cry from the beaches of Greece, but at least the food is good.

New Apartment Complex on West side of Town?
When I heard the rumblings of a proposed apartment complex on the west side of town, I knew it had to be something big based on the people involved.  So big, that I made a special visit this weekend to see just what was going on.  Turns out, it's far from certain but there have been some pretty interesting discussions that have indeed happened.
WestLake Apartments Austin, TX

The expense incurred to build apartments in this area similar to what they do in Texas would probably be cost prohibitive.  Here's an example of a place in WestLake Austin, TX that's very similar to the layout I lived in when I was there.  It was like living at a resort. The point being, it would be nice to have future complexes here that aren't so uniform and plain.

Pathetic!
It's the only word that can describe media's latest debacle which is now the Olive Street parking garage.  At this month's council meeting no one seemed to care that estimates to fix the garage were twice the projected budgeted cost.  I do give credit to councilman Davidson for at least asking a question regarding the financing.  As for further discussion on why the bid were so high, the rest just sat around and said NOTHING.  Why's it so much? What are the problems? Is it cost effective to rebuild?  Can it be expanded? IS IT SAFE?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I suppose the drug operations that led to gunfire on March 7th really doesn't mean much to them either, but it does to the residents.

Media's Biggest Brewfest Hosted By Iron Hill Brewery - May 17th 2014

With Iron Hill Brewery recently hoisting up their newly awarded 2014 Beer Cup trophy, you can bet the event they hold in Media this May will be more popular than ever.  For those who haven't gotten their tickets yet, that's not good, as this was an extremely popular day to begin with and now even more-so.

Check out their site, and get you tickets soon......if you can.  The proceeds of this event go towards helping out the Media Youth Center.

Media Resident, Bill Tyson appointed to RTM School Board

Congratulations to Media resident and former borough councilman, Bill Tyson for his recent appointment to the Rose Tree Media School Board.  Bill fills the seat vacated by another Media resident Chris Guilday who recently received an appointment by Governor Corbett to serve on a committee for the Philadelphia River Port Authority.

A special thanks to both Bill and Chris for their exemplary and continued service to the community.

Poem In Your Pocket April 25-26, 2014

Poem In Your Pocket  April 25 - 26, 2014

Poem In Your Pocket is modeled after the original celebration that began in New York over a decade ago.  On Friday andSaturday everyone in the community is encouraged to carry a poem in his/her pocket.  The purpose is to share these poems--which the carrier has selected or written--with as many different people as possible.  This may include friends, family, classmates, teammates, colleagues, the dentist, shop keepers, the mail carrier, your waiter, and so on . . . and if those people have a poem to share back, all the better!

On Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26 participating businesses in Media are welcoming people to come in and share their poems.  If you read your poem aloud in the business they will give share a discount or a treat.  You will know a business is a Poem In Your Pocket participant because they will display a Poem in Your Pocket Poster.  This event is sponsored by the Rose Tree Media School District and recognized through an official proclamation by the Borough of Media.

Media Borough Council Considers $850,000 Bond to Repair Olive Street Garage

The multiple bids that came in to fix the Olive Street Garage turned out to be twice the amount of the original projection of $350,000.  Last week, Councilman Davidson at the monthly council meeting asked the financial procedures for leveraging a $850,000 bond.

Sneak Peak at Rose Tree Summer Concert Line-up 2014

Rose Tree Park Amphitheater
Without further adieu, here's a sneak peak at this year's line-up of who will be performing at Rose Tree Park's Summer Concert Series 2014.  I'm working on some plans on how to share this in a better way, but until then, take a look at who will be performing.

Here's the link to the county's website for the listing and important updates.

Media's Iron Hill Brewery Wins The Prestigious 2014 World Brew Cup!

Media, PA WINNER!
If you ever had to make a reservation or get on the waiting list at Media's Iron Hill Brew Brewery for dinner, you know it's a popular place.  Well, those reservations may now have to be made sooner and the waiting times will surely be longer due to one of Media's favorite topics - BEER!

From the residents of Media, It is with great pleasure to share that Media's own Iron Hill Brewery won the prestigious Brewers Association World Beer Cup 2014 Champion Brewery and Brewmaster Small Brewpub!  This is not any small feat, but a global quest to find and promote brewing excellence.  It's considered the most prestigious beer competition in the world with over 60 countries participating and more than 1,400 breweries competing for the honor.

Congratulation to brewer, Bob Barrar and Media's Iron Hill Brewery for putting Media, PA firmly on the map as a place for the best beer in the world!

Here's a video of how competitive this honor is:

Media in Two Minutes

Media in Two Minutes......A little Late

Despite my best efforts to take off for Easter holiday and skip this week's Media in Two Minutes on Sunday; It's just not going to happen! Okay, so here's quick version of M2M.

ATM Spotlight!: You may not know this, and very few people do, but on a good month this town is known for raising 10's of thousands of dollars for all kinds of causes.  This weekend, was Carlpalooza which was organized to help a Penncrest classmate of mine Carl Edwards raise money for medical bills brought on by colon cancer.  The event was planned months in advance, but the problem was finding a venue that could accommodate a crowd of this size.  Low and behold, Broomall Lake Swim Club stepped up and offered to help out and donated their facilty.  That generosity led to Carlpalooza raising over $11,000 dollars!  A special thanks to Beth Schwacke-Doris and her team for making this such a success!

In addition, great to see the community helping out the Conquest Family with donations to help offset costs associated with the loss of their home due to fire last week!

Making a Move in Media
Whether it's a tech company looking to move into Media or the new ownership of a building on State Street, or a deal to move a liquor license; there's a lot happening.  Oh, and another business may be coming too.

Stay tuned and in the meantime, welcome to Media - The Dress Matters - opening 4/26.

Residents Not Happy about Trash Day
Tonight it was brought to my attention that trash wasn't picked up on Good Friday, which is understandable, but the schedule on the website wasn't updated and many thought trash would be picked up Saturday.  Typically, if your trash day falls on a holiday, it's picked up the next day. I'm here to tell ya, that people get upset about this.

Media Fire Company Needs Your Help - Volunteer!
I was at two events this week and had two separate conversations about how desperate local fire departments are for volunteers.   We as a community need to take it upon ourselves to get the word out that this is a serious matter and I challenge everyone to do what they can to help.  I plan to go down there on Saturday to find out what's involved and what people can do to help.

Media: Everybody's Hometown Food Court
Is Media Becoming One?
As retail businesses give way to restaurants and eateries, is Media becoming one big food court?  Perhaps that's lucrative and acceptable for now, but at some point there has to be over saturation.  With Media losing a possible 100 parking spaces or more with the repairs needed for Olive Street Garage, lack of parking could add further stress to Media businesses.

Media Elementary Principal Maria Kotch tenders resignation.

This afternoon Media Elementary Principal Maria Kotch notified families via phone message that she will be submitting her resignation letter to the school board.  She mentioned retirement as the reason for the decision.

Granite Run Mall Gives Deadline to Vacate Dec 31st 2014

The end of an era - Granite Run Mall to Close
This weekend I learned that things are progressing with the closure of the Granite Run Mall.  From what I understand occupants in the interior mall area have been told the mall will close on December, 31st.  Some businesses are in the process or finding new places to relocate to, but it's unclear if others will do the same or decide to just close.

I heard Margart Kuo's plans to stick around and is interested in opening a new restaurant when the new center is ready.

Media in Two Minutes

Media in Two Minutes

My deepest sympathy and condolences on hearing of the passing of Shawn Brodie during the tragic fire in Chester on Saturday.  I knew Shawn as "Brodie Bear" and he was one of the most likeable guys you could meet.  I never saw him without a smile on his face.  He will be greatly missed.

Tedman

ATM SPOTLIGHT
Having been to opening day for Media Little League yesterday, I now know why Media has state champion teams; it's one of the best run organizations around.  From the fields, to player, to coaches and the many who support this program on a host of levels; it's TOP NOTCH.

Yesterday's ceremony that included hundreds of people was excellent.  Thanks for the recognition and providing an important program that everyone is proud of.

Please support the Conquest Family whose house was ravaged by fire this week.
Thankfully, no one was hurt in the fire on Summer Lane this week.  However, the family's house was totally destroyed which would be a hardship for anyone.  If you can, even a $5.00 donation can add of quick to help a family in need.

ROTARY Does it Again
Everywhere I seem to  turn, I see Media Rotarians out and about helping the community.  Yesterday was the 48th Annual Media Pancake Breakfast.  Even at 8am there was a line forming to get in and looked to be huge success.  Great Job!

MC Automotive for Motorcycles
Media, you're in luck if you ride a motorcycle and need repairs.  I found out after knowing someone who knows someone; that Media does indeed have a motorcycle repair shop right here in the borough.  Craig down at MC Auto did an EXCELLENT job on my bike and the recommendations he had for tires on my '08 KLR 650 were spot on.  Thanks!  I'll have a few more coming your way.

Media Fails to Notify Community about Olive Street Garage

The ask was easy: Put signs up in Olive Street Garage warning people of the effects of rain run-off leaking through the seams.  And yet again nothing is done by Mayor McMahon and Borough Council.  Yesterday, I was contacted AGAIN about damage incurred to a car because of this problem.  It's not just dirt, it's the harsh substances that make up concrete that is being carried by rain water onto people's cars and destroying the paint and finish.

Delaware County has an Edge!
I see these kind of videos all the time and I don't usually watch pass a minute or so, though this one was produced extremely well and resonates with viewers.  If you're interested in what this county has to offer and what direction it is going in, check out the video.  Well done and produced by a company in Media.

Helping the Media Food Bank
We are collecting for the Media Food Bank BEFORE the Opening Day Parade, up at the Middle School.
There will be a truck (or trucks), with signage, parked off to the side for collecting all the donations. They will accept almost anything: non-perishables, frozen meats, and paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, tissues). Families are asked to bring whatever they can to help, whether it is one can or one case of food.

The Media Food Bank (MFB) is a federally funded service run through the First United Methodist Church on the corner of State and Lemon Streets. They received notice that there would be no federal delivery for April, which means they are relying on local support. They serve people in Chadds Ford, Rose Valley, Aston, Media, Concord, Swarthmore, Thornbury, Middletown, Brookhaven, Parkside, and Nether Providence. The families that use this service during hard times line up 2 hours before the doors open just to feed their families. The volunteers there work tirelessly to help these families are always extremely grateful when the community comes together to help. We ask that all information gets shared and passed around to everyone and anyone in the area to make a big impact.

Our Fourth Annual Beef and Beer Celebration will be the evening of Saturday, April 12th, from 7:00pm to 11:00pm.
  • Once again it will be held at Saint Mary Magdalene School (2400 North Providence Road).
  • Tickets can be bought at the door that evening, from your Manager or a Board Member, and will also be available during Opening Day festivities. All proceeds go to support Media Little League.
  • We are also looking for donations (autographed items, home services, tickets, outings, refreshments, etc.) to be auctioned off during our Silent Auction. You can reply to this email if you have anything to donate. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated!
  • We will have Dancing, a Silent Auction, Raffles and Food.
  • Dress is Casual.
