Help Needed In Finding Family's Lost Cat Named Mickey

I was contacted this morning with a picture of a lost male cat named Mickey.  Mickey has all of his shots and has a micro-chip. He has distinctive markings (white patch) on his chest and has green eyes.

The family who submitted the request would appreciate any help from the community in finding their pet. I'm not sure of the location where it was lost, but be on the look out.  The family can be contacted at this email, and will come pick the cat up.

Media in Two Minutes

Media in Two Minutes

I want to take a few seconds to briefly address the outcry a few people had with the upcoming demolition of E. 5th Street.  This property was bought by a family who after much consideration, did not feel it salvageable in it's current state.  In turn, they've decided to build a new home modeled after the existing structure.  I not only think it's a good idea and prudent, but also applaud their commitment to this town and the consideration of a very sizable investment for Fifth Street.

If people still have issue with that, I can only recommend you consider who you voted for and ask why aren't they doing more to advocate historical preservation and discussing it with many who have questions on this topic.  I doubt they are even aware.
I like highlighting issues I know are important and of interest to residents and share when I can, but I'm not the one you should be holding accountable for answers on a matter that's much bigger than a single house on a street in Media.

ATM SPOTLIGHT: Last Wednesday's Food Bank Fundraiser was a smashing success.  The biggest problem was carrying out all the food that people had brought.  The food, people and event made for a great evening at Picasso's.  The Nutella crepes are still a big hit, btw.

Congratulations to everyone who helped out, especially the Media Rotary Club.

Middletown on Track to Get Traffic Light at Forge Rd. and Rt. 352 (Middletown Rd).
When Old Forge Road was closed due to the repair of the bridge, a temporary traffic signal was placed at Forge and Rt. 352 to handle re-routed traffic.  When the bridge was fixed, the light was removed to a lot of people's dissatisfaction.

Last week I got an update that this traffic signal will be brought back as a permanent fixture. The hold-up regards the grants needed to pay for the costs, which are expensive.  Either way, this is money well spent for the safety of travelers on this road.

The Parking Mess in Media!
This topic could probably have its own exclusive site, but first-thing-first.  A couple months ago we were told there were discussions taking place by the mayor and MBC on enforcing parking on Saturday's.  Well, what happened?  Looks like that plans were dropped and parking on State Street WILL NOT BE ENFORCED on Saturday's.  Who knew?

Why are Media's Parking Meters Displaying "OFF"?
I'm at a loss at even trying to come up with a comparable analogy that would describe Media's latest debacle over solar powered parking meters.  I do know this: someone needs to be held accountable over not doing the proper due diligence for this project.  As of now, these meters are displaying an "off" message which someone also needs to explain.

When you have no leadership and accountability, by a single party with an exclusive majority, this is what you get.

The 8th Annual Elwyn 5k Run and 2.5k Walk
If you're looking for some training prior to Media's 5 Miler Run, here's a great warmup 5k happening at Elwyn Institutes on Saturday, May 3rd 2014.

Barrall Field Update!
I'll try to get an update each and every week on this, but as of today, this is still on track to be completed before baseball/softball season.  From what I understand, a sewer junction box had deteriorated, which led to the sink hole.

Little Shop of Horrors presented by Penncrest
You can catch today's show at 2pm, which I plan to do.  I appreciate those who consider my recommendations for these great events, especially those that support our community.  It's hard to attend all of these, but this group did a really good job and I plan to check it out myself.

Third Street Bridge Update:
There may be an update on this as soon as this week pending the meeting with Judge Proud. The cost over-runs and lack of effective resolve have made this a political disaster for Media, students, and our first responder services.

Abandoned Sleighton Farms Dorm Burns
This property has been closed for years and to the best of my knowledge is still owned by Elwyn.  There's been a lot of speculation that this was to be developed, but I've not heard anything recently regarding firm plans.

Here are pictures by Middletown Fire Company showing Saturday's fire.

Delco Ranks 2nd in State for Park and Recreation Facilities

As reported by the Daily Times this week, Delaware County is doing quite well when it comes to park and recreation services.  As stated below, we have the second best access in the state to parks and recreation.
Delaware County residents have the second-best access to locations for physical activity. About 95 percent of residents have adequate access to a park or recreational facility.
“That’s huge,” Malinowski Weingartner said. “Just about everybody in Delaware County has that access.” www.delcotimes.com March 2014
That's quite an achievement!

Speaking of parks, Ridley Creek had quite the crowd for today's opening of fishing season in Southeast Pennsylvania.  Despite the rain, many were having bountiful days.

The Passing of Media local, Dr. Bill Lucas

March 7, 1962 - March 25, 2014
It's with a heavy heart to share with the community the passing of Media local, Dr. Bill Lucas on March 25th.  I knew Bill and often saw him on State Street from time to time.  He was not only a well liked resident, but a very interesting person who was an expert in his field of virology technology.  He also had a BBQ business that was easily the best smoked food this side of Texas.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to his friends and family.  He will be missed dearly.

For more information and funeral services, please visit Bill's obituary.

Demolition Scheduled for House on E. Fifth Street in Media

The new owners who recently purchased the property on E. Fifth Street will be making plans to demolish the existing structure and replace it with a brand new house.  The new home will architecturally reflect what is currently there now.  Demolition to begin in a few weeks.

Media's Solar Parking Meter Disaster - Borough Council Didn't Properly Plan for Lack of Sun

Sun setting (literally) on Media's Solar Parking Meters!
Borough taxpayers will not be happy to hear that the effort by Media Borough Council to install solar powered, credit card acceptable parking meters is quietly being phased out.  The problem here is that the lack of sun on the south side of State Street does not provide nearly enough solar energy to keep the batteries charged.  In fact, I'm hearing that they are frequently swapping the north side meters with the south side in order to try and keep the meters functional.

You can't keep doing that forever, but with the replacement of batteries apparently costing almost as much as these meter take in, the outlook isn't good.  In fact, I'm hearing they may return to purchasing mechanical ones that were there before.  Unfortunately, the old meters that were replaced were either given away or sold.

Over a year ago I openly questioned this decision and even discussed why I thought parking kiosks made sense.  Maybe that idea will receive some credence now that the whole effort has to be done all over again.  Expensive?  It may cost up to $10,000 due to the poor planning by a council that clearly can't even determine which way the sun shines, let alone manage a town.

Media in Two Minutes - Lights, Camera, Action!

Media in Two Minutes

Wow, spring has sprung! Maybe not quite the weather yet, but there is a lot going on and even more about to begin.  I'll do the best I can to make it short this week.

Before we begin, I want to let the community know that I contacted the Media Police on Friday about a very serious matter that was brought to my attention.  I'm still waiting to get further clarification, but I'll let you know what comes of it.  The gist of it is, if this community isn't getting timely information on serious crimes that could impact their safety, then there's a problem.
In addition to that, two weeks ago on March 7th, we had a widely reported news
Why is the mayor and borough council NOT addressing
drug operations at Media's Raven Motel?
story on a drug bust that went awry at the Raven Motel here in Media.  At this week's borough council meeting Mayor McMahon failed to mention anything about this and why such an operation was conducted here.  Furthermore, neither Council President Hall nor the rest of council made any attempt to address this.  They were literally busy playing a game and guessing how many fair trade towns there were.
Mayor McMahon's report on restaurant week apparently seems more important than explaining drug activities in the borough.  You get what you voted for.
Tedman
ATM SPOTLIGHT: I'd like to recognize Dana Mancini and the Media Rotary for their tireless efforts to make this town better any way they can.  Coming up on Wednesday, March 26th they will be hosting a fundraising event at Picasso's on State Street to help raise money for the Media Food Bank.

Folks, I know everyone is busy, but I want to share a reason why you should consider this event.  Last Thursday, I swung by the Media Food Bank for their weekly food distribution to families.  What I saw was a line of people out the door, down the parking lot and all the way down Baker Street out to Lemon Street.  I've never seen it that long and if you need motivation to attend Wednesday, please consider what people are trying to do to help this matter.

Sink Hole at Barrall Field

There is nothing more exciting than being a kid and waiting in anticipation for opening day to play your favorite sport - It's the best.  That's the first thing I thought of when people started contacting me over the sink hole at Barrall field and when it's expected to be fixed.  I looked into it and here's what I know:  This is not a RTMSD issue and is being dealt with by Media Borough.  Apparently, there have been assurances that this will be fixed by softball season.

It's not so much the actual repair of the issue, but the heavy equipment needed that will subsequently impact the field.  Grooming the field after the equipment is gone will take the bulk of the time for this operation.

Kudos to State Rep. Tom Killion on Grants Towards RTMSD
Nice job by Tom getting around $800,000 in grant funding to have RTMSD school buses converted to CNG(Compressed Natural Gas).  The improvements in pollution are impressive, let alone the potential cost savings.

Light's, Camera, Action!
A lot of fun for those who caught the big TV production setup that was brought into Media for the filming of television pilot: "How to Get Away with Murder" staring Viola Davis.

Viola Davis
At about 8am a convoy of trucks converged on the Media Courthouse to begin setting up.  I caught up with one actress and the group she was with to let them know there were plenty of places to shop and eat on State Street.  She went on to explain that they never know if they'll be on set for three hours or twelve, but looked forward to checking out what they could.  Even despite telling them they didn't need to pay the parking meters on Saturday, nor would their cars be towed; I still wasn't offered a part in the show. (listen, I know I wasn't going to get the love scene, but c'mon)
No business, like show business

This pilot has been filming in different parts of the area and at a few universities.  As I had mentioned a few months back, there is a growing interest and organized advocacy towards shows and movies like this being produced and filmed in this area.  I think we'll see some more news and locations selected, maybe even Media, in the future.

John's Grille - What's Next!
I really enjoyed writing the piece this week on John's Grille and I think a lot of people liked it to.  There's been quite a lot of interest in what happens to the building/business, but from what I heard Friday there's one group looking into this that could really do some great things with the place, by maybe not doing too much to it at all.

There will be a lot of pivots before a buyer is selected, but I expected something will be announced in the next few weeks.

Another Restaurant for Media
Site of proposed diner. (N. Orange St)
I plan on writing more about this next week, but in the meantime, a man and woman from Media have teamed up to launch this venture. I believe they have a background in catering, but don't have much more information than that.  I imagine this will take months to open and not weeks.

Media's Solar Parking Meter Disaster
The idea behind solar powered devices is that you have to have them in the sun to work.  If you ever played with glass radiometer spheres in 4th grade, the concept is easy to grasp.  Unfortunately, Media Borough Council is about to learn the hard way how this works with taxpayers picking up the expense.  More on that this week.

$$$ on the way for area potholes!

This year's pothole catastrophe due to the harsh winter has been unprecedented.  You don't need me to tell you that, but what I can share is that County Chairman, Tom McGarrigle  of Delaware County Council announced that approximately $250,000 will be distributed to the 49 county municipalities through a program called the Pothole Assistance for Taxpayers program.  More work will still need to be done and perhaps repaving in parts, but it's start and something that only Delaware County has initiated so far out of the 67 counties in PA.

New Diner Being Proposed for Media on Orange Street

Still yet to be finalized, but Media Borough Council and the Media Planning commission are looking to allow the introduction of a new diner at the former Blue Berry Bog location on Orange Street.  Stay tuned....

Media's State Rep. Tom Killion announces $300,000 towards Cleaner Running RTM School Buses

State Rep Tom Killion's Facebook Page:
Rose Tree Media School District has been awarded $300,000 in the second round of competitive grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for the purchase of school buses that run on cleaner-burning, less expensive compressed natural gas (CNG). This grant is in addition to the $500,000 award received in the first round.

John's Grille in Media, PA - An Imminent Sale will Write The Final Chapter

The final chapter is about to be written on Media's oldest bar, John's Grille and I really dislike the whole thought of having to say "good-bye."  What's made me come to this realization is the imminent sale of the bar/building that may be announced very soon.  I suspect the new owner will have plans that even if slight, still won't capture the character of what once was.  I can deal with that, and I can deal with whatever plans they have, but what is hard to get over is how special this neighborhood bar was for so many for so long.

I'm proud to say I had a beer at John's Grille among the many who aren't forgotten!
A picture hanging on the wall in John's Grille
Truthfully, I was only here a few times a year which usually included Tuesday night's when they had $.60 tacos; but the place was authentic and genuine.  If you ever took a look at the pictures on the wall you would see a bit of history as to what it was like in this place before WWII.  You'd also see people who really didn't care about the fancy side of town, but just liked to grab a drink and socialize with friends and neighbors.  It was a local joint and had every bit and feel of one - that's hard to replicate and something you definitely can't fake.

I was told the place was haunted from the stories I heard from the waitstaff and a favorite stop for those workers getting off third shift at the local post office.  At one time not so long ago,  John's opened up its doors and served drinks at 8am. Not sure if we'll ever have a bar in Media that opens that early again, and I'm not sure why we would, but that is what people did back then.  For those that didn't know, and only a few do, this was the last bar that would take you as a patron if you were thrown out of all the rest.  Oddly enough, quite a few who came to that realization and found themselves in that situation, usually didn't last long at John's either.  Neighborhood bars are like that.
John's Grille in Media, Pa

John's also played what you could call a community role when it came to dangerous weather - they were always open.  Rain, sleet, deep snow and even Hurricane Sandy when many were without electricity, John's provided a place to get something to eat and had free wifi.  You'd be surprised how many people showed up and appreciated that.

In my opinion, the town of Media owes a debt of gratitude to this establishment and to Jim Carney and his family for the 78 years of  dedicated service.  This place was an important part of this town, as many who went there made Media what it is today.

Raise your glass to John's Grille!

Looking forward to working with the Delaware County Parks and Recreation Board

It was a distinct honor to have been appointed to the Delaware County Park and Recreation board this morning.  I not only look forward to working with this board, but also with the great communities and parks that make up Delaware County.   Bringing awareness and improvements to our green areas and the recreations they provide will be a priority, but so will making sure each and everyone can enjoy them as nature intended.

I also appreciate the support of those who took the time to be in the audience today and the exciting ideas shared about the Glen Providence County Park here in Media.  These areas and activities should be inclusive, not exclusive.

The Problem with The Traffic Light at State and N. Orange Streets

If the following scene is frustratingly familiar to you, then you know all too well that this traffic light at the intersection of W. State Street and N. Orange was never properly synchronized when installed over a year ago.  In fact, you may know this issue so well that you’ve seen people ignore the red light and drive right through it, as someone pointed out to me this week.  Yes, it does take that long for the light to change that many people think it's broken.  As for others, they just wonder when it'll be fixed.

This same issue was brought up months ago by the borough engineer, but yet still nothing gets done. What's it take to fix, a call to someone to make a software configuration change?  A whole 3 minutes? It’ll most likely gain awareness now that it’s on this blog, but people need to take responsibility for the people they voted for on Media Borough council because they are not doing their jobs!

Media in Two Minutes!

Media in Two Minutes!
I'm just going to start typing away hoping I can make some semblance of an interesting story for today's M2M.  I must say, yesterdays' attendance of the St. Paddy's Day Parade in Springfield isn't making for a clear mind this morning, but WOW what a great day.  Also, special thanks to Uber who provided a bit of the transportation.

Ok, Let's Go!

ATM SPOTLIGHT!  Springfield's Irish Parade
Without a doubt, this was the most fun I've ever had at a St. Paddy's Day Parade.  At 10am I took the Media Trolley over to Saxer Avenue to a place called Duke's Tavern.  As I walked into Duke's, I saw virtually every front yard setup with tables, decorations and flags.  There were people every where and at that very point, I knew this was a big deal.

As the crowds grew, so did the anticipation as the beginning of the parade started at 12pm.  This wasn't your typical Media Mayor McMahon parade that lasts 4 minutes and 32 seconds, this parade went on continuously for 90 minutes.  It was a lot more than a parade, it was a wholeheartedly community celebration that included schools, dancers, businesses, emergency departments, Delaware county, state reps, congressmen and more.  If you had a special achievement you were proud of, I'm sure you had a chance to walk in this parade - it was that good and very well run.  Nice job, Springfield!

Media Youth Center Hall of Fame Induction Dinner
I couldn't stay very long at this event, but I did drop by long enough to see they had a great turnout.  It was great to see a lot of businesses and families contributing to this cause, especially Iron Hill Brewery that really steps up with a generous contribution.

Congratulations to last night inductees:
  • Carl Boston
  • Jack & Eunice Messick
  • R. Barclay Surrick
  • Donald Trusty
  • James Walsh
Rose Tree Fire Company St. Paddy's Day Celebration
I promised I would attend this event and last night I was able to make that happen.  I had a really good time visiting with the Rose Tree Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary group that organizes this fundraiser.  They had a great turn-out that I'm sure had a lot to do with the excellent food and entertainment.  It's great the community has an organization like this, as I know a lot of people enjoy socializing and helping out their local fire department.  Great to see a lot of folks from the Holly House there last night.

The Future of John's Grille
I was very sorry to hear the passing this week of James Carney III who was the owner of John's Grille.  The place will never be the same, and neither will the comforting atmosphere this bar provided to so many for so long.  For those that don't know, the bar and building are for sale with from what I hear moderate interest from at least one buyer. We'll see what happens here.

Looking for something to do today?
If you're looking for a change of scenery and have 30 seconds, check out this video.  It's a little early in the season yet, but this place will be a great place to visit in the warmer months.

Unity Animal Hospital Pet Food Drive for Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry

In an effort to continue our commitment to community outreach, Unity Animal Hospital will be holding an ongoing Pet Food Drive with donations being delivered to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.  There are many people in need in our area and that need extends to their furry family members.  When people are struggling, often the needs of their pets are too much of a burden to bear.  In an effort to keep pets in their loving homes and make sure their nutritional needs are met, we are asking for your help. If you would like to participate please bring unopened dog or cat food and place it in the donation basket located in Unity’s waiting room.  We would gladly accept dry or canned pet food as well as treats.

The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is a volunteer staffed food pantry housed in Prospect Hill Baptist Church in Prospect Park.  They are a non-denominational, non-sectarian food bank that covers roughly the Ridley and Interboro School Districts. They are a member of the Delco Interfaith Food Assistance Network (DIFAN), an organization of 11 food pantries covering Delaware County.  For more information please visit their website.

Media in Two Minutes

MEDIA IN TWO MINUTES
You never like seeing dangerous situations occur like the one that happened on Friday, but it provides a useful point: Make NO MISTAKE, don't mess with Media, PA.

I know the Raven Motel provides a service for those who are in need and for others in tough economic situations, but for all of those who think they can hide-out or conduct illegal activity, YOU'RE WRONG!  Media has the BEST police and first responder force around, and as seen on Friday, this town will bring more community awareness, officers, backup, equipment, and fire-power to guarantee you won't succeed.
Tedman

ATM SPOTLIGHT - Media's Woman's Club 120 years
Congratulations to the women of Media and to their club that's celebrating its 120th year. That's a great achievement, ladies!

Backyard Office

People liked last week's post about the Escape Cabin, so here's a little more of that from Weston, Surman and Deane.  Office sheds are really becoming popular and below is an example of why that is.

John's Grille in on Facebook

I have no idea why I'm so intrigued by this, but it's pretty cool that John's does the social media thing.  In addition, I didn't know they had a website too............BUT HOLD ON!  Since when was the $0.60 taco Tuesday raised to $0.65?!?!?!?!?!  Place must be getting popular.

What's Aston have that Media doesn't?
Coming to Aston, Not Media
Well, to start with they have Gordon Lightfoot coming to pay them a visit.  More importantly they have a state of the art music venue that is filling up quick with national acts like Gordon and other well known performers.

If these acts played at the Media theatre throughout the year, Media would have more commerce and economic stimulus than it would know what to do with.

The Future of TV and Reporting.
If you've ever setup a playlist on your Mp3 player or computer to customize your listening enjoyment, you'll like what's to come in the way of television and online video.  In the near future you'll be able to program a channel that draws from your favorite selections of video content.  Whether that's Youtube, Vimeo, Netflix, NBC10, blogs or your local newspaper; you'll get it on your TV in a seamless delivery.   Local newspapers are starting to catch on with broadcasts of their own.

Media 5 Miler - Is it too Late?
Only you can determine that, but if you haven't signed up for the Media 5 Mile Race on June, 20th 2014; you better get on it.  This fills up fast.......very fast!

Wimpys now serves Breakfast:
I'm told they have the best burger in town, which I'll have to swing on by and verify.  However, they also now serve breakfast.  Check them out.

11 Reasons Wawa Is America's Best Convenience Store
I didn't know there were 11 reasons as to why Wawa is so well liked in America.  We should be lucky to have such an admired company who would want to build a marque store in Media.  It's too bad Wawa has been given the run-around by a borough council who knows alarmingly nothing about economic invesment.

Twitter has a place in Media, PA
Last Friday's police activity at the Raven Motel didn't break first by delcotimes.com, or event Facebook; it came by Twitter.  Most people don't get the idea of Twitter, but it serves locally as a very important communication and advertising tool.  Two businesses that really use this well are House restaurant and 320 Market.  Check out how businesses effectively use Twitter.

Heroine and Prescription Drugs in Media.
You're kidding yourself if you don't think these things are happening right here in Media. They are, and I've been to the funeral services.  Every bit of effort to help combat this epidemic is helpful.  Here's a video from Delaware County Council on the matter and what's being done to save lives.
