Taxi Service in Media on NYE and Interesting Options!

Peer-to-Peer Ride Sharing.  Could Technology Replace the Taxi Business?
For those that don't know this, and who will probably find it out the hard way come New Year's Eve; the taxi service on this night is quite limited.  It's gotten better over the years from the the likes of County Cab, but it is still hard to get a cab in Media, let alone enduring the wait time.

If you're a bit adventurous and tech savvy, there are smartphone apps out there that provide ride sharing.  Essentially, you download and app from one of the few services, (Uber, Sidecar Ride, Lyft), indicate you need a ride, and a verified driver comes and picks you up.  This is also not a bad idea for anyone looking to be a driver over NYE and looking to make a few bucks.  You'll have to pass a background check to be a driver, so keep that in mind. If you become a driver in the Media area for one of these services, I'll be happy to promote you free of charge.

I think only Uber operates in this area, but the concept may someday just be Media's solution to a lacking taxi Service.  Sorry, Kaiser Cab, we'd certainly take you back if you were still around.

Media in Two Minutes - Go Eagles

Hopefully you're in Dallas reading today's post while getting ready for the big Eagles game later this evening.  I was hoping to be on my way to Dallas this morning while writing this post and doing the same thing. Not to be, so here we are with another round of Media in Two Minutes.

Ok, Let's Go

ATM Spotlight: Fresh Bread at 320 Cafe
I've taken a liking recently to the bread selection, especially the French Baguettes, at 320 Market Cafe on State Street.  The bread is fresh and goes quite well with the traditional soup season that now falls upon us in the winter months.  Check it out if you haven't been there.

A Kind Gesture on Christmas Day
On Christmas Day at 1:45pm I saw a woman walking around N. Olive and 5th Streets placing Post-It notes on cars.  I initially thought something may have happened like a robbery or accident that she wanted to people to know about, but turns out she was just leaving kind notes.  One read, "A balloon makes someone happy." Maybe you got one.

Trouble on State Street?
I really hope this isn't true, but I'm hearing there is some kind of disagreement going on between the retail businesses and restaurants on State Street.  Interesting, because I attended a MBA (Media Business Authority) meeting a few months ago and asked why did ~25 retail business owners sign a petition to have the MBA financial records released for public review.  After the board took turns telling me how insulted they were for me bringing up the topic, they then told me the financial reports were on the website in plain view.  Before I went to that meeting, I searched their website 3 times and didn't find the reports.......I still can't.  If you find them, please post.

It looks like a committee will be setup to review the marketing issues between retail businesses and the restaurants.  Isn't that what the MBA is suppose to do in the first place?  If they represent all businesses in Media, shouldn't they have addressed this months ago?

It's Expensive to Park on Media Streets
Collision on N. Orange
There was a heavily damage car I saw this week parked on N. Orange that I suspect was from some kind of accident.  I'm not sure if it was from a drunk driver or someone not paying attention, but the damage was visible and the car appeared to be pushed up on the curb.  A similar situation happened to my truck a few months ago were it was parked and hit by a drunk driver on 4th street in the early evening on a Sunday.  I'd be interested to know what the breakdown of monthly car accidents in the borough is.  Other than Baltimore Ave and Providence Road, I've have to guess Orange Street is the most used road to get into and out of Media.  If nothing more, another reason why Third Street should be opened.

NYE in Media - How I'd do it.
I'm a low-key kind of guy which means I'm naturally not into the rowdiness of  the New Year's Eve celebration.  One year, I was among the crowds to see the ball drop on State Street.  It's fun, and if you're into that scene, then check it out.  Be prepared to potentially get doused by sparkling wine, as I wasn't and I did.
Choice Place for NYE in Media

If you want something more subtle, here's what I recommend if still available:  The best place to go on NYE in Media is La Bella Epoque on the corner of Olive and State.  They have great food, atmosphere and the best wine/champagne selection around.  To make this work, you have to get seats at the bar and reserve the two high-tops by the window by State St. if you can.  The layout is nice, you don't feel cramped and the noise level to socialize and entertain is well within acceptable levels.

Send in the Drones
It is a mere matter of time before someone flies a drone down State Street to film Media.  The learning curve to fly one of these things is almost non-existent now that they come with autonomous flight guided by GPS.  I was surprised to see how big a market there is for this stuff, as a full setup costs just a few hundred dollars.  I don't believe you can fly them over public property, but it seems the technology has far outpaced local ordinances.

Media Sued, Again!
How Things Get Done with Media Boro. Council
Last week I mentioned a matter that I held off on sharing with readers, but today I'll reveal.  The Friday before Christmas, MRE filed papers with the courthouse to take Media Borough to court over the requirements they had for the proposed Wawa project.  Apparently, after two years, Media Borough Council wasn't prepared to negotiate the segment of land Media owns that is crucial for the project.  Media borough council didn't have a real estate consultant until two days before the 30 day deadline MRE needed to decide by.   The second issue, involves the $290k Media wants from MRE/Wawa to alter the traffic pattern on Providence road.  It's not clear if Media has the authority to make such a demand.  Lastly, I'm not a traffic engineer, but how did the one Media Borough hire not even visit the intersection in question before making a recommendation on how the traffic should be handled?

Now Mayor Bob McMahon and Media Borough Council have us in two lawsuits over two vital issues for the borough.  Is this now how things get done in Media by suing the borough?  Is there anyone out there that believes this mayor and council can get anything done?

Media's Biggest and Most Interesting Stories of 2013

When I first thought about writing this article is was just going to be a quick and easy list of the  biggest, if not interesting stories that affected Media, PA in 2013.   Then I got to doing some research and found there were quite a few compelling things that happened this year in Everybody's Hometown.  Some good, some bizarre and others just what you'd expect from a small town of about 5,200 people.

The selection process for this year's "Biggest in 2013" was based each post's visitors, comments, fun factor and impact to the community.  I also chose a few that wouldn't have made any other 2013 list, but were special in their own right. We'll start of with the biggest story and work it from there in no particular order.

Ok, so I have a lot to cover here in my typical abbreviated format and I won't keep you in suspense over the most viewed story on ATM.  Yes, that's right!  The big news released in October 2013 was the announcement that GRM had been purchased.  The story came together pretty quickly after months of rumors and speculation.  When the plans were announced and posted on this site, thousands came by to check it out.  The future of GRM will not only have an economic impact on the region, but will also be felt here in Media.  This will be a closely watched and developing story in 2014.

Suprisingly this wasn't the most comment article; not even close.  That honor goes to the Third Street Bridge which we'll get to.

Hometown Sports and Education
I don't think this was high on anyone's list, but it was for me.  This encompasses a few categories, but all equally important.  I want to congratulate the Media's Girls Softball team and Penncrest Football for the extraordinary seasons they had this year.  And how about Penncrest Scott Hi-Q who won another championship in 2013?  I can tell you, the community really enjoyed these successes.

Most Bizarre
We had a tie on this one, but it's a category that can't be denied.  First off, who on this green earth steals a man's BBQ pit in broad daylight out of the back of a parking lot?  This is what happened to Jack's Tavern back in August 2013.  I don't believe it was ever found, but what has the world come to.

Our second story and perhaps even more bizarre happened in Septemeber 2013.  Listen, if you show up to a Media borough council meeting with a dead cat under your arm, you're going to make a lot more than a list on some blog.  And sure enough, that's what happened to this person.

Media's Biggest Birthday
At a certain age birthday's don't have the same fun factor as turning 21 and experiencing the full force of the campus bar scene.  However, when you turn 100, you get special recognition here on ATM and that's how we celebrated the century mark for the Media Trolley.  They even dressed up the old 101 Line in a fancy, retro remake of her old self.  Happy Birthday, Media Trolley.

A Hotel Comes to Media Springfield
Seven years after clearing what seemed like endless hurdles, all we have in Media are broken dreams of a once promising hotel project.  On the other hand, there was still significant news on a hotel here. 2013 brought the grand opening of Springfield's Marriott Courtyard which is thriving and illustrates what can be done with a "can do" attitude.  There's no need to really explain this further on how and why this happened to Media, the results speak volumes.

Most Inspiring - Media's Bike Rack
It's not easy to take a concept, present it, fund it and work the many details to make it a reality.  However, that's exactly what happened with this years bike racks that were provided to the town of Media.  It's the enthusiasm and ambition by the people of this town that make it a pleasure to live in.  Nice work her by the Media Rotary and DCTMA, especially Dana Mancini and Lauren Avellino Turton.

Most Unexpected - Lima Wawa Closes
This caught me off guard regarding how many people stopped by ATM to get the story on the closing of the Lima Wawa.  This was BIG news, especially in Middletown.  I really enjoyed the comments from those who grew up with this location...I was one of them.

Most Fondly Remembered - Black Hawk Spring
I don't consider myself a captivating writer on any level that could tell the rich history of the Black Hawk Spring, but I gave it a shot.  WOW, did that turn out to be worth it.  This post was one of the most viewed in all of 2013.  I also think it was one of the most appreciated too.  Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment and share their stories of this lost treasure - a natural spring.

Most Unexpected  - Stolen Bike Recovered
The power of social media does have a place in this town, though it's not even close to being fully recognized as a public safety tool.  When it comes to communicating an emergency, update or public notice about Media, no one can do it faster or to as many people than ATM.  Not Media Borough, not the Police, not anyone.   And coming from one person who does a lot of this casually from a smartphone, I even agree that something is not right here.

Case in point: a few months ago someone texted me with a photo of a stolen bicycle and asked if I'd put it on ATM describing what, where and when the theft took place.  This site isn't about crime fighting, but I did believe this entailed a public safety announcement.  I posted the information and sure enough the bike was found at Media Elementary playground in under 24hrs by people who saw this story.

Most Commented - Third Street Bridge
The comments alone on anything related to the Third Street Bridge situation, take on a life of their own.  On two recent posts, there were over 100 comments.  As things are looking in 2014, it looks like this topic will continue to be heavily debated.  19 years of non-sense and local government at its worst will do that.

Ruckus on State Street Causes Damage

Broken Window on State Street
If you were wondering why there was a boarded up window on State Street, here's the story.  From what I understand there was a ruckus by Joclyn's front entrance at around 2am Saturday morning. The commotion finished with O'Malley's lower store front window being smashed.

Media in Two Minutes - Merry Christmas

Media in Two Minutes

With the recent warmth it feels more like Christmas in July, than December, but I'm not complaining about this morning's 66 degree temperature.  It's actually a nice reprieve from what I hear will be another cold snap coming in at the end of this month.  I like the cold weather too.

I'm actually working on a Best of 2013 post that will highlight all the interesting news about Media over the last year.  It'll include things that were bizarre, cool, interesting, lousy and of course, the biggest story of 2013.  That'll be out in a few days.   I think you'll like it.

Ok, let's go.

ATM SPOTLIGHT!  Media Borough Staff
I want to sincerely thank Borough Manager, Jeff Smith and everyone who works for Media Borough for their exemplary efforts towards making this borough the best it can be.  In all my time here, I've not had one complaint, nor have I really heard any, about this group, it's conduct or great service they provide.  That's not only impressive, but that's the foundation that Media's become known for.  And if that's not enough, they're some of the nicest people you could meet.  Nice Job, everyone and have a Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas Tip

Kudos to the Highway Department for picking up the trash in Media and also to mail handlers who always get the job done.  These people do great work and are worthy of a Christmas Tip.  Money is well received and I'm sure baked goods are too.

2014 - The Year of Traffic Inconvenience
Next year will not be kind for those who drive and park in and around Media.  On January 6th, Penndot begins repair on a section of Orange Street between Highland and Rose Tree Road.  This is the span that crosses the Media by-pass.  If that's not bad enough, the ongoing work on 252 in Upper Providence will continue on well into the new year.  The future work on the roadway across Springton Lake Dam will not start until 2015, but like anything else, that'll be here soon enough.

It's only taken me two years of writing about it, but Media Borough Council has finally begun to solicit a RFP for the work needed for the Olive Street Garage.  Depending on had bad the repair is, it may be out of service for awhile.  At this time, they are expecting to potentially begin work in June 2014.

Public Stuff - New To Media
You probably have no idea what "Public Stuff" is or how it could be used to notify the borough of important issues.  The reason is, it was poorly launched.  If I get some time, I'll fill everyone in on what that's all about.

Plumstead Inn Knows Christmas
When I was younger I always admired (still do) and greatly appreciated the Christmas decorations in the Plumstead Inn, especially the Christmas cards that are hung up each and every year.  Many years ago before I left for Austin, Texas not sure if I'd ever be back to Media, I asked the owner, Chuck Margis how someone gets a card on the wall.  He said, "send a card I'll put it up."  Sure enough I did send a card from Texas all those years ago and sure enough he still puts it up.  That folks, is Christmas in a small town like Media, Pa.  Thanks, Chuck!

Media Ordinance - Removal of Snow 24 hrs after Storm.  That includes Councilman Davidson!
When Councilman Paul Robinson made a statement on Thursday reminding residents of Media's snow removal ordinance,  he should have looked to his right at Council Kent Davidson.  Davidson's sidewalks weren't even touched and were left snow covered for the last 5 days.  Get it together, Davidson!

Fellini's Cafe in Media Opens New Room
Fellini's New Room
There's no need to go into how good the food is at Fellini's, we know that.  However, they now have their new room open that included the recent expansion into the adjoining space that was formerly the Salad Stop.  I really like what they've done here with the rough cut timber for paneling and copper topped tables.  The room can handle big parties which is a welcomed addition and good to know.

Media Wawa - You won't believe it.....you really won't!
Since I'm feeling in the Christmas spirit, I have decided not to share the latest bombshell of an update I received over the weekend regarding this project.  I'll post it in a few days, but in the mean time prepare yourselves.  And I don't mean that in a good way.

There are some peculiar things going on here that Media Borough council has not shared with the public, but I will in do time.

And One Last Thing.......
Here's to being alive, cool and interesting in 2014!  Be safe out there and don't let it pass you by!

A Reggea Christmas Coming to Media TONIGHT!

A well known local tradition in Media, PA has always been the informal reggae christmas that takes place at what is now known as Sligo's pub.  This has been going on for years with some iconic bands like Jah Works taking stage in the past.  But true to the spirit, it all started with band members Bruce Scott and Jimmy Ziegler who really made the group "Jimmy Shoe and the Shine" a Media household name.

"Timeless" may be the right word to describe this band and their Reggae Christmas performance.  "Awesome" and "Great Entertainers" is often heard too about these guys.  Don't take my work, check them out.  Get there early, there will be a line out the door!

Lack of Accountability by Media Borough Council

Believe it or not, I have about a million other things I could and should be doing other than videoing Media Borough Council meetings.  So why am I doing this today?  It's easy, the total lack of accountability by Media Borough Council is something all residents and businesses should be concerned about.  When you have an exclusive majority held by one party, don't expect anyone to step up and take a stand over being responsible because it's easier for them to pretend nothing is wrong.

Coucilman, Eric Stein missing 8 consecutive meetings as the laison to the Media Business Authority was one thing.  Councilman Kent Davidson's shenanigans regarding what many claim to be a conflict of interest regarding Third Street Bridge (he lives 40' from the bridge) is another, not to mention the undisclosed website he was found to be providing to Friends of Glen Providence Park.  Then you have the inappropriate behavior of Paul Robinson insulting groups like Middletown Township, RTM School Board and Upper Providence for their interest and concerns over the Third Street Bridge.  During all of this, not one person on borough council even batted an eye, let alone stood up an spoke out.

Last night the hits just kept coming with Council President Brian Hall blaming a calendar of all things for not being able to rule on a zoning change submitted by an applicant.   Perhaps borough council wasn't prepared, perhaps the applicant submitted incorrectly; but to skirt the responsibility and blame a calendar is pathetic.   Not in my professional career have I ever heard someone use such an excuse. This community and the applicant shouldn't stand for that either.

It's becoming clear why it took Wawa 14 times to present their plans to the borough in the last two year, or why we're going on 19 years without any clear direction on the Third Street Bridge.  No one on council knows what's going on! $20,000 for poorly made video sold to the borough by a telemarketer?  Sure, why not.  The company that produced it was fined for fraud!  And if you saw the video they did for Media, you wouldn't have any trouble believing that.

How to report a lost or found dog in Delaware County, PA

Luckily, I've not seen any lost dog/cat posting that you see from time to time on telephone posts or bulletin boards within the borough.  When I find these, I do what I can to post these announcements to this site.  I'll continue to do that, but there is another formal proceedure for reporting a lost or found dog that I wasn't aware of.

Media Borough Council Spends $29,200 on Legal Fees For Third Street Bridge. And for what?

Media taxpayers pay the cost.
The $29,200 Media borough council spent on lawsuit against Third Street bridge may be small in comparison to the millions incurred due to repair cost increases over the last 19 years, but at the end of the day, we still aren't any closer to having this situation fixed.  In fact, it has probably slid further backwards now that the matter will again be presented to Judge Proud based on the recent news this week from the PA Commonwealth Court.

It was reported a few days ago that Middletown is planning to replace two bridges in its township, while Upper Providence makes plans to repair route 252 over the Springton Lake dam.  Both project being responsibly handled and not obstructed by conflicts or interest and political agendas.  $29,200 could have gone to the library, fire department or a host of causes, instead it went to lawyers.

How many bridges did you cross to get to work today and how much more will Media taxpayers have to pay?

Media in Two Minutes

ATM Spotlight - Winter Weather
Media Water Works
In the last seven days we've had three storms that have led to measurable snowfall in the area.  Not sure if that's an indication of what's to come, but with it not even being officially winter yet; we've gotten more snow in the last week, than all of last year.

This week we also felt noticeably colder temperatures.  Thought not quite thick enough yet, the Media Water works was frozen over to stand on.  Too bad Bill Battey's isn't around to provide skating equipment they were so well known for.  Do people even go skating anymore?

Why So Salty, Media?
When it comes to snow saftey comes first, which means rock salt and various ice melts come second.  I suppose there is no way around it, but the stuff gets all over the place and hangs around well after the ice is gone.  I don't use it at my house for those reasons, but I imagine it's not something businesses look forward to towards cleaning it up in their stores.

A Bed and Breakfast in Media?
I know of no plans of such a place, but it strikes me odd that Media, Pa doesn't have a B&B.  Yes, there are some great ones just outside of Media, which include Alpenhos, Sweetwater Farm and Hamanassett; but nothing in the borough.  I always thought Plymouth Hall, if reverted back to its original setup as a hotel, would make a great lodging addition to Media.  Perhaps rebranding the Raven Hotel as something along the lines a Chateau Eza might help.  Then again, maybe not.

New Years Eve in Media has potential
The 5,000 people that come to Media to watch the ball drop on New Years Eve has a lot of potential.  In fact, it's big enough that it should have it's own MC and perhaps a line-up for the night that includes a multitude of performances and maybe interviews.  Something like how the broadcasters cover the event in Times Square.  Maybe cover it on a public channel on cable or via the internet in HD.  You could probably even sell advertising space throughout the show.

I thought Media Theatre and Roger Ricker had a GREAT idea when they would interview people on a set they brought to State Street during events.   It had a red couch and seating like something out of a late night talk show setup.  It drew a lot of interest.

Media Elementary and Alice in Wonderland.
The Alice in Wonderland show put on by the 5th graders at Media Elementary really turned out to be a big hit.  Great to to see the RTMSD performing arts initiative getting the kids involved.  Nice Job, everyone!

Media Borough Council is Inept!

Media shouldn't come to expect much from a borough council that has to take a vote on when to mail out a letter, which was the case a few weeks ago.  However, what we should expect is a governing body that doesn't make matters worse for the town.  Yet that is exactly what happen this week when the PA Commonwealth Court found them in Contempt of Court over Third Street Bridge.  Not sure how much this fiasco has/will cost taxpayers, but I've requested information from the borough manager to get to the bottom of it.  As it becomes available, I'll post on this site.

When you vote for people who can't outline or discuss issues in the borough and instead claim they are "problem solvers,"  "go-getters" and my favorite, "think outside the box;" you elect people who are in over their heads.  How bad is it?  I'm told this council is so ill prepared that the first they heard of the court order was through this blog!  Maybe I should have covered Wawa better so they wouldn't have needed to meet with them 14 times over the last 2 years.

An up and coming rockstar who got a start in Media, PA!

We don't get the celebrity spotlight shown on Media frequently, and by that I mean people starring on the late night talks shows.  Look, I've never been on Jimmy Kimmel, not that I can think of any reason why I would be(at least not yet); but area local singer and songwriter Jeff Campbell who got his start playing on Media's State Street, did! Yes, that's right!  Jeff and his band were the musical entertainment for the Kimmel show last night and featured songs from his latest album "In Spite of Everything."

I get people from time to time asking me to promote their latest music on ATM, which is great, but I never get the time to listen to it, so I usually pass (except for R3 and the Broozers).  With Jeff, I did take the time to check out his site and songs.  WOW, the production of the music is excellent and the songs even better.  Check it out -  Jeffcampbellmusic.com

Hey, Jeff, don't forget us little guys in Media, PA.  Best of luck with the music!

A little history on Jeff:
Jeff's parents, Jeff & Jeanette (Johnston) Campbell are from Media and graduated from (Penncrest/Notre Dame) in 1972. Jeff moved to San Francisco about 12 years ago to more actively pursue his music career. He has been playing in Media since he was 14 years old at many of the different bars/restaurants on State Street as well as Philly, New York and across the country.  He was this years winner of The Guitar Centers Singer/Songwriters Contest and just released his EP produced by Grammy Winner John Shanks. Check him and his live performance out at Jeffcampbellmusic.com

First Responders - Media Emergencies Don't Take Snow Days

When we get into the winter weather season here in Media, Pa we always have those who comment on the snow removal from the streets and public areas.  With two storms this week, I think the Media Highway Department did a pretty good job, but then again I drive a 4x4 truck which makes the situation a lot easier from my stand point.
Emergencies Don't Take Snow Days!

This week I did receive an email from a first responder who was concerned about the icy roads in Media he had to travel over to get to an emergency last Tuesday night.  The roads were quite treacherous that evening as the snow and slush quickly froze by the evening hours, after having been just mostly wet in the afternoon.  Was there enough salt applied?  This person explained that Upper Providence was in much better shape than Media was and he wanted to know why.  I don't have that answer.

Both Baltimore Ave and N. Orange Blocked due to Sunday's Snow
Nobody expects the streets to be perfectly cleared hours after a snow storm, but I think this is fair and constructive feedback from those whose job it is to respond to emergencies in the borough.  It also illustrates how important it is to have ALL our roads open, including Third Street!  During Sunday's snow storm cars were stranded on N. Orange going into Media and Baltimore Avenue heading out of town was at a stand still.

I'll keep an eye on this throughout the winter season.  Thanks to all our first responders(Police/Fire/Medical) who keep us safe around the clock.  No matter the circumstance or weather, we appreciate your service!

Tedman

Breaking - Commonwealth Court of PA rules in Favor of BLCC on Third Street Bridge

Media Residents Keep Paying for Bad Council Leadership
This afternoon I was sent the ruling by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania which favors BLCC in their appeal to re-instate the stipulation and contempt of court ruling over Third Street Bridge filed against Media Borough last year.  After 18 years, and more recently the last two years, of borough council not understanding the basic definition of "restore to what it once was," as applicable to vehicular traffic; they will now have to explain to the community the added costs of losing this ruling.  They essentially gambled on a bad bet that may require the community to pay for the entire multimillion dollar project.

It is an embarrassment that we have a borough council who has been accused of threats, stacked committees, pushed slanted surveys, insulted communities and was even found providing a website to a group that used it to manipulate a community park for their own agendas against the bridge. Transparency? Now it appears that Media's Borough Council has been found in contempt of court.  Seriously, I can't imagine how this situation could have been mismanaged any worse.

Two years ago this project was 100% financed and ready to begin.  Now it's anybody's guess if the money is still available, which is a tragedy in this day in age where infrastructure projects are not receiving the desperate funding they need.  This council even spoke up about the importance of financing these types of projects via the PA Transportation Bill when Septa threatened to close the Media/Elwyn Line due to lack of repair, yet they can't even figure out how to fix fully financed problems in our borough!

Here's document in its entirety

Glenwood Elementary Teacher wins Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Award!

2014 Teacher of the Year
This is quite a big achievement and deserves the recognition that bestows such an honor.  Earlier today the 2014 Pennsylvania Teach of the Year Award was given to Anthony Edward Grisillo who teaches at Glenwood Elementary.  You can read more about it on delcotimes.com

There is also a great write-up about Media Elementary Teacher, Tracey Fritch who was also one of 12 candidates for today's selection.

Thanks to not only Anthony and Tracey, but to all the teachers and staff that continue to make RTMSD a model of excellence!

Roads looking decent for today's morning Commute

Delco Roads Improving for Today's Morning Commute
As of 5:15am this morning the roads for the most part are clear and drivable.  With the current temperature at 33 degrees (F) and expected to rise, the slush is giving way to a lot of water on the road with pooling in some areas.  Media Station road is still a bit snow/slush covered, but I'd expect that to be better suited for driving in the next hour or so.

Follow Septa on Twitter
Last night, RTMSD issued a 2hr delay for this morning.  Per Septa's Twitter updates (@SEPTA_ELW), the Media/Elwyn line and Media Trolley (101) are operating on or close to scheduled times.

Media in Two Minutes - Snow Way!

Media in Two Minutes

It very rarely happens, but last weekend was the first time in maybe a year I didn't write "Media in Two Minutes."  I was certainly asked about the omission, but the real reason was because I was sick and not able to get my act together last Sunday.

Today we have snow in the forecast along with the 7-5 Eagles taking on Megatron and the Detroit Lions.  Let the Christmas season begin!

Ok, let's go!

ATM SPOTLIGHT!
Two things I have a great admiration for:  A good cup of coffee and a hand written letter.  I have horrible hand writing, but I take great pleasure in writing and receiving hand written correspondence.  A lost art some would say, but still alive and well for those who understand the underlying importance.

Readers here at ATM comment, text, email, show up on my front porch and bristle with talking points when they have the chance to challenge me on State Street.  I love it all, I truly do.  But when someone writes me a letter, I can't help but appreciate the time it takes to do something like that (write it, buy a stamp, mail it, etc.) It's the epitomie of AUTHENTICITY. Last week I received such a letter from a couple who wanted me to know how much they enjoy this blog.  WOW!  So, Stan and his wife get this week's ATM spotlight.  That's pretty cool and I will get in touch with you.

Media Warez - Everybody's Hometown
Every year I'm asked this seasonal question and this year it's no different.  For those who enjoy wearing "Media Everybody's Hometown" apparel and providing it as gifts; my best recommendation is to stop by and see Drew Arata at Earth and State to see where you can pick up these items. You can get them at the borough hall by the police station, but I'm not sure there is any website to purchase online.

To my surprise, someone was selling these shirts on EBAY.  EBAY?  Media is missing a lucrative market by not having these readily available online during this time, or anytime of year.

Vacancies on State Street
As I've mentioned in the past, it's never pleasant to announce the closing/relocation of businesses on State Street.  One in particular was Starry Eyed Optical that recently moved to 3 E. Baltimore Pike. I thought they had some of the best window displays around.  In fact, I photographed a few displays they had and posted to this site.

What happens from here is anyone's guest regarding the property.  This is a great store front, with a very good location on State Street.  We'll see what becomes of it.

Media's Strangest Place
Forgotten Cemetery in Media
A lot of people don't know about this place and probably fewer have ever stood foot on its ground, but Media has a very old burial site (Old like 1704, old!) located on Providence Rd very close to the five points intersection.  Other than a few extremely weathered tombstones and a plaque by the stone steps, there isn't much that designates this as cemetery.  I'm not sure who if anyone oversees this plot or its upkeep, but it just strikes me as a peculiar that has been essentially forgotten.

One interesting note is that the plaque states that 12th President of the US, Zachary Taylor's ancestors are buried here.

Santa Comes to Media
Not sure how last week's visit by Santa went, but I'm interested to hear more about it.  I heard both good and not so good comments, but would like to open up the topic for discussion.  If it was good, great, if you have something to contribute to making it better, please speak up.

How Media Got Its Name
I never knew this sign existed probably because I never paid attention enough, but on Orange Street down by the train station there is one very old and very authentic cast iron sign that explains who gave Media its name.  I have no idea how long this sign has been here, but I'll guess decades.  I don't know if this is one of a kind or other signs exist throughout Media.

Chiropractic Skills
One of my favorite, if not often overused jokes goes something like this:  I guy walks into a bar and complains he has a weak back.  The bartender, showing compassion asks, "well, how long have you had it?"  The reply, "Oh, about a a week back!"  Ok, jokes aside, if you do have back problems there is none better than Dr. Amoia who runs Hometown Wellness on State Street.  He started about 14 years ago and the reason how I know that is that I was there the very first month they opened.  There have been years I haven't gone, but it's good to know he's around. How good is he?  Let's just say you have to make an an appoiintment well in advance.

Deals, Deals, Deals
This Christmas season don't forget to stop in and see Deals on State Street. Whatever you could possibly need, they have.   From a can of soup, to decorations, to automotive products and beyond.  In fact, I don't think I've ever walked out of Deals without finding something that I needed.  It's the go-to shop for everything, especially when you turn-on the Christmas lights and find that one bulb segment not working.

Why a great school district is important and why RTMSD gets it.
I'm really struggling with how to make something as ordinary as a local school board and district interesting in the eyes of the community, but hear me out.  What I do in between weekends entails researching and developing some of the most cutting edge technolgy in the world.  What we're bring to market early next year is something Netflix, Google or even Appple couldn't come close to pulling off.  Part of my responsibilities include working and managing teams throughout the world to make that happen, mostly to validate a proof of concept. The development is actually done in the US.

The point here is that of the 42 countries that we have participate, there is only one that dominates and that's China.  They are developing the best algorithms in the world, which are the underpinnings to a lot of data calls and process reasoning for software- exotic stuff.  To a lesser extent, South East Asia is becoming well known for graphic user interface design.

These are real world scenarios that illustrate the importance of our local education and how crucial it is for students to be able to compete in a world economy.  Next time you hear or read something about the Rose Tree Media, take some time to think about it.  RTMSD continues to do great things with a Superintendent and board that I think we're very fortunate to have.

A Media Tradition - Bevan's Own Make Candy EST 1959

I can't think of anything chocolate doesn't go with.  I'd probably say beer and chocolate are a little awkward, but others may argue to the contrary.  Beer has its own following and chocolate may even have a bigger one.  Ok, so maybe chocolate is the perfect food which means Media, PA is a very lucky town.  Perhaps not on par with a town named after its famous chocolate like Hersey, PA; but we have our own Media MADE chocolate and candies by Bevan's Own Make Candy.

If you're looking for small gifts for family, friends, the office or just to have candy on hand for visitors; look no further than Bevan's Candy.  This Christmas season's batch is excellent.  If you haven't tried their many varieties, especially their caramel sea salt chocolates, then get on down there to see and TASTE what you're missing.

This is a family run business that has been making candy since 1959.  They haven't forgotten how important the community is either.  Bevan's candy has been contributing their candy to many charitable causes throughout the area.  I recently saw Randy Bevan and team sharing his expertise and candies at just such an event.

Keep up the great work!  Media appreciates Bevan's!

Best Places to Purchase a Christmas Tree

With Thanksgiving now concluded and the leftovers probably devoured too, it's now time to get down to the traditional quest of purchasing a Christmas Tree.  If you have an artificial tree, well, then you might not find this post all that interesting, but if you don't and enjoy having a cut tree, keep reading.

I'm no arborist, but I have sold quite a few Christmas trees in my day.  In fact, it was one of the very first paying jobs I ever had.  I've always enjoyed it and is probably why I always get a fresh cut tree as soon as I can.  I'll tell you where you can get the best tree around,  but first I want to let people know that both Middletown and Rocky Run Fire Departments are selling trees with 100% of the proceeds going to their volunteer services.  That's pretty cool and a very noble effort that deserves recognition.  I'm not sure if the Media FD is doing this, but let me know if they are.

As for Media, the only two places I know selling trees includes the lot at Rita's Water Ice on Providence Road and the produce store on Baltimore Ave on the west side of town.  Never bought a tree at either, but for convenience, they are in Media.

Ok, so here's the deal:  The best trees I've ever come across can be purchased at Kirkpatrick's Nursery on Middletown Road out in Glen Mills.  At one time, Kirkpatrick's started out as a Christmas tree farm, so it's a neat place to visit.  I get mine there and can say there are none fresher. In fact they were cut days ago from a place just outside of Hamburg, PA.  You won't get these for bargain prices, but you also won't have half the needles fall off when you bring it in your house. These go quick too, so this weekend might be your best change to get one here.

Lastly, if you like to cut down your own tree, Linvilla has a great setup for this.  If you're looking for a little more adventure the West Chester Railroad has a great event where you ride the train out to a Christmas Tree farm, cut a tree, load it on the train and ride back to West Chester.
