Does Media Have A Trick or Treat Curfew?

Happy Halloween 2013
Happy Halloween to all you trick or treat'ers out there this evening.  It's a much better night then a year ago were some municipalities were considering moving Halloween to the weekend due to altered schedules and the debris in the neighborhoods caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Tonight it looks like everything is off to a good start.  I can hear the kids going up and down the sidewalks this very moment.  There even looked to be a haunted house setup on the corner of 4th and Monroe St. and I'm sure other locations.  Most popular costume?  That's a good question, but I'm hearing there are a lot of Snow Whites out there.  Candy?  I can't imagine Reese's Peanut Butter Cups ever going out of style.

This week I was asked if there was a Halloween curfew in Upper Providence.  Technically there isn't, but UP does follow a weekday curfew that starts at 10pm.  As for Media, I have no idea, but It would strike me a bit strange if someone came to the door after 10pm, or even 9pm.  Either way, the night typically winds down around 8:30pm.

Have fun!

Fire Departments called to State Street Last Night!

There was a bit of excitement on State Street last night that definitely got the attention of the local fire companies.  Not sure all the details, but a reader submitted a few photos of the incident that appears to have occurred after midnight.

As of this morning, there was no apparent damage to the businesses or buildings.

Tune in Tonight at 7pm for Phil Heron's Discussion with County Candidates

Tonight at 7pm EST we will be simulcasting Daily Times Editor, Phil Heron's discussion with County Candidates.  On the list this evening we have Republicans contenders Dave White for County Council and Jen Holsten Maddaloni for Register of Wills.  On the Democratic side we have two Media locals, Bill Clinton from Upper Providence and candidate for County Council, as well as, former Media Mayor and candidate for Register of Wills, Frank Daly.

What more mischief could possibly happen on a night like tonight?  Live video stream begins at 7pm.

Small Business Saturday - Make it Media, PA

American Express is behind this small business marketing campaign, but I really think they hit the mark with getting the word out about what small businesses mean for the community.  A video like this customized for Media, PA could be an excellent marketing tool for this town.  Short (<~1min), engaging/fun (video store owners and customers), impactful and easy to distribute (promotional video like this would go viral on a host of business website and social media).  It would also be a great way to promote the town when big events are in the area like the US Open, music festivals, or even events held out at DCCC that drew thousands from the region for the recent 5th Annual American Muscle Mustang car show.
Media can be one of the best towns in America!

I'm not so sure the 9 second ads Media posts on a electronic billboard outside of the Philadelphia airport are that effective.  Mostly because I don't understand the audience these ads are for?  I think the real appeal of Media is to the communities that surround it - Nether Providence, Upper Providence, Edgmont, Middletown, Concordville, etc.  Unless there are analytics to prove me wrong, I don't know who driving up I-95 and is compelled enough to head straight to Media after seeing a 9 second ad.

On Tuesday, November 5th, Media will have great opportunity to ascend to new levels, and with your vote I hope we can take it there.

All Things Upper Providence? For Candidate David Daniel it is!

All Things Upper Providence

Dear ATM Readers:

My name is David Daniel, I’m an Upper Providence Resident and current candidate for the First District seat on Township Council. Since I write “Media, PA” as my return address on every letter I send (yes, I still use the mail), I think the election in Upper Providence Township fits the theme of this blog. I want to thank Tedman for giving me the opportunity to write and, most importantly, for his support and friendship over the years.  Having known Tedman for many years, in my mind, there is no question that he is qualified to be Mayor of Media, and has the intelligence, commitment and character to be a great Mayor.  I appreciate the chance to tell people more about me and why I’m running.

David Daniel - Council Candidate for First District Upper Providence
If I had to pick an overall theme for my campaign and why I’m running, I would say “its about people not politics”.  To quote an incumbent Democratic, Upper Chichester Commissioner’s statement to the Daily Times: “I think people vote for someone based upon their reputation and responsiveness, and I think people are intelligent enough to know that local politics is about police protection, trash collection and street lights.”  That’s why I’ve tried to knock on EVERY door -- Democrats and Republicans alike -- because I’m running as me and not against the Democratic Party.  I would hope my opponent believes the same, and agrees that for local council race running as “not a Republican” is not a platform or a solution.  After knocking on 400-500 doors, I believe the people who agree with that are in the clear majority, and very few have been so hyper-partisan that they have not at least taken the time to talk or be polite.  This is Media, PA, not Washington, D.C.  I’ve been pleasantly surprised that most people are friendly and neighborly, and that has motivated me to keep going when my first instinct would be to spend a nice relaxing day or evening at home watching football.

I’ve learned that there is never a good time to knock on someone’s door to introduce yourself, and I haven’t meant to cause anyone any inconvenience, stress out your dogs, but to me, there’s no excuse for a candidate not to take the time to meet people face to face, so, I won’t apologize for knocking on your door.  For all the talk about from some about the lack of transparency in local government, what is more transparent than having the chance to speak to a candidate face to face to discuss your concerns, or having their cell phone number and e-mail address – something I put on every piece of material I hand out.

Why am I the person who can do this?  That’s a good question.  First and foremost, I am committed to this community.  Working for the Public Defender’s Office has taught me to be thankful for what you have, and I consider myself lucky to live here.  I’m thankful to be at a stage in life where I am settled in where I live and what I do, so that I have the time and drive to serve on Council.  I’ve tried to be involved from day one, whether its serving on the Zoning Board or attending community meetings (I attended almost every 3rd Street Bridge CAC meeting).  Anyone who says “that’s easy to do” has never served in that capacity or taken the time to do it. I believe I’ve earned the respect of my colleagues and neighbors who know when they are dealing with me that they will be treated fairly, courteously and professionally.  I think I am a good fit for the job because election to Council won’t be the start but a continuation my community involvement.  Much like the legal profession, the job entails researching issues, discussion and debate with various parties and proposing solutions.  I don’t expect to agree with every voter on every issue, but I would like to think that people would think of me a decent person and good neighbor first.

Where do I stand on the issues?  I pay taxes too, and I want them as low as possible.  Anyone who has been to the grocery store with me knows my wallet doesn’t open easily.  I want the police, fire and other emergency responders to have the resources they need to protect the safety of the community.  Its no secret that I support the opening of 3rd Street Bridge to vehicular traffic.  That’s my opinion and others are entitled to theirs. I disagree with shrill attacks in this debate whether it is demonizing the BLCC (sorry “Anonymous” Terry Rumsey) or calling the Friends of Glen Providence Park terrorists (sorry Steve MacDonald). I would be happy to support the Friends of Glen Providence Park with time and money if they would agree to take no position on the Bridge, because I believe in the other aspects of what they do.  I’d like to see other open space such as Scott Park put to good use and think that some of the ideas to link it with Mineral Hill have great potential.  There is a meeting coming up soon in County Council Chambers at the Government Center Building in Media where the final opportunity for public comment will take place (maybe an idea for another article Ted).  There is information on the plan on the Upper Providence for Open Space website.

Why vote for me?  When comparing me and my opponent, I am asking you to look at my involvement with the community before I started running for Council.  Throughout this process, I’ve developed a measure of respect for anyone who takes the time to run for office.  With due respect to my opponent, I’d say what distinguishes me as the better candidate is that I have been involved years before the election, and have taken the time to participate in local debate.  I’ve learned a few things over years, including re-evaluating my positions on issues.  I’m glad I was able to do this without the responsibility of serving on Council.  Thanks for taking the time to read about me.  Feel free to call or e-mail if you want to talk.  Cell = 610-368-9109.  E-mail = ddaniel1966@yahoo.com.  I hope you find me a worthy candidate and I hope to have your support November 5.

                            Very truly yours,

                            David S. Daniel

New Signal for Crum Creek, Rose Tree, State Rd. Intersection
Good local government includes good communication, which is not something we see here in Media.   However, here's a site being updated by Upper Providence Council Chairman, Joe Solomon on the latest developments regarding the Rt. 252 project.  This site also includes an area for comments should you have questions about individual matters pertaining to this work.

In addition, the website states that the intersection combining Rose Tree, Crum Creek and State roads will be getting a much needed traffic signal in 2014.  This is being provide by the developers who recently completed the construction of the new homes East of Crum Creek.

A Great Story About D'Ignazio's Towne House Restaurant in Media, PA

I guess I'm a history buff when it comes to the classic family owned restaurants in and around Media.  Unfortunately some of my favorites are gone like the Long Horn Ranch and the Log Cabin Inn.   However, one still remains which may be the most important one of all - The Towne House.

If you want to find out how Veteran's Square got it's name, you're in for a treat.  This is a great article by the Brandywine Conventions and Visitors Bureau that everyone should read whether you've lived in Media all your life, or just moved here.  This iconic restaurant is one reason why people call Media "Everybody's Hometown"

Enjoy!

Media in Two Minutes

Dear Reader,

If you live in Media Borough, on November 5th you can elect a real leader for Mayor who will take the time and commitment to make Media the best it can be.  I've written over 1,400 posts and heard thousands of comments of what's important to this town.  When residents and businesses didn't have information or answers to important issues, I went looking for them to share with the community no matter what the circumstances were.

Community Involvement Matters!
On the eve of the year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, I want to let people know that Media Borough website was so ill prepared to deal with the event, that people came to this site for help and direction.  This isn't some corporate site I run, it's just me with a bunch of computers and an iphone, but I knew it necessary to keep a line of communication open so people could interact about the storm.  It wasn't so much what I could do, but a place where people could discuss and hear updates that they wouldn't get otherwise from this borough. This week I'm writing a piece this week on why your safety may come down to who you choose for mayor based on a very serious matter that occurred in 2011.

If Mayor McMahon doesn't feel the need to relate with this community, than I'll share mine.  Here's an example of what I was doing during last year's hurricane.

Thanks for reading.  I'll be campaigning in town today so I hope to talk to voters one-on-one.  If anyone would like a sign for their lawn, I have them too.

MEDIA IN TWO MINUTES

Last Sunday of the Month - Breakfast at Media's VFW Today!
If you haven't given this a try, it's a pretty good deal, as is the food.  The last Sunday of every month Media's VFW holds a family style buffet down at their facility located on 11 Hilltop Road.

Halloween in Media Pa

This is a fun time of year and nothing gets the town into the Fall spirit than a great Halloween parade.  There was a big turn out for this event yesterday that marks its 49th anniversary.  There were also quite a few costume parties in and around town too.  Thanks for the consideration to have me judge one of these event, but of the few hours I do sleep, 11:30pm is one of them. Send me a picture I'll be happy to post it.

Media's ThunderBird Dinner
I want to thank the organizers, the Media Youth Center and the Gross' for another fine event that raises money for one of the oldest establishments around -The Media Youth Center.  This has been going on since 1958 and I can only imagine how much money this effort has raised over the years.  A million dollars?  Probably more.  I'm not only impressed, but in awe of the commitment and resilience of the Gross family.  Thank you for your support and impact on the youth of this town.  I not only say that as a resident, but one who went and played at the Youth Club as a kid.

Franklin Mint vs. Granite Run Mall vs. Media
I have no idea what to expect of the now restarted project to develop the Franklin Mint site, but I do know this is another group with deep pockets and a track record of making popular properties.  They are also actively seeking tenants for this current effort.  I was out there yesterday, so I'm not sure what'll happen to the Wawa site that is currently occupying office space on the property.  Perhaps they'll stay and move into one of the newer office buildings that is expected to be built.

State Street - New Stores Come and Go
Penncrest vs Ridley 2013
Yes, there will be what looks like a soccer store coming to State Street in the same location that once was Sassy Girl.  As for stores or restaurants that close, I don't share the name of the business if I'm told in advance or find out otherwise.  I figure these businesses can let the community know when they're ready.

Penncrest Football goes to 7-2
Ridley is still one tough football team, I know it, as I also played them at Penncrest.  In fact, my last career football game was against them at Penncrest in the snow.  Friday's night game had a great attendance and I'm glad I could make it.  The season is not over yet, but I've truly enjoyed seeing the community rally around this team.  Nice Job, Penncrest!

If you don't know Dave Daniel, you will Tuesday!
Dave wrote me an email on Friday asking if he could write an important message he wanted readers of ATM to see.  When I read his letter, I thought to myself that he's made more sense about what's going in this area than anyone I've seen before.  I think you're going to like what he as to say.  Stop by on Tuesday morning.

What's going on with the Third Street Bridge?
I'd like to know, because I had a conversation with a figure whom I'd call a very influential democratic party member here in Media who asked why couldn't it be built to a two way lane specification and allow for one-way traffic? Now, unless I totally got that wrong, and I mention that because this is bizarre; this is a deal BLCC has been interested in sometime and may have even proposed the same configuration themselves!

18 years, wasted taxpayer money and apparently, Media Borough Council are the last ones to know what's going on a multi-million dollar project?  Truthfully, this whole situation could be wrapped up in 18 minutes if this council cared about the community and not their own personal agendas.  WOW!

Lack of Media Mayor's Leadership Taking Toll on Borough - Make a change Nov 5th!

Septa - Pa Transportation Bill Funding - What has McMahon done?
I found it absolutely appalling that after 22 years as Mayor, Bob McMahon can't come up with anything better than generalizations and not committal statements, but that's been by careful design.  This week on Patch.com he had the opportunity to communicate to Media on the state of Thirds Street Bridge and what his position is on the economic investment a company like Wawa could bring to the borough.  He failed.  He also failed to mention anything about a real, serious issue that could affect 100s of daily commuters traveling to and from Media with the recent Transportation Bill needed for Septa funding.  I've not only called and met with legislatures, I've reported it back to the community.  I'll fight for Media's best interests.  Yet McMahon brings up over used metaphors like "outside the box ideas," as if that's some new whimsical approach.

He would like the community to know he has new ideas on parking, but what exactly are they?  I'd suggest that they do something to fix the Olive Street Parking garage that I've been writing about for two years.  Have you seen the rain water run through it?  Smart parking meters and kiosks?  I've also been writing about that and have shared a lot of ideas that other communities are utilizing the improve their parking situations.  From smartphone apps to analytical reporting.  Speaking of which, it took Mayor McMahon 15 years to implement the $1.5 million CMAQ project that the state provided to upgrade and synchronize traffic signals on Baltimore Ave, Providence Road and Orange Street. 15 YEARS and an additional $200,000 from taxpayer due to the mayor's mishandling!  It took Springfield 2 years to to the same project!

Mayor Bob "No Plan" McMahon
When was the last time anyone heard a statement by Mayor McMahon about Media's Hampton Inn or Fire Company?  How about the recent news on the Granite Run Mall Project, which will affect Media?  What's the future of Trader Joe's?  Youth activities? New businesses? In the time he's been mayor, has he ever given a "State of Media" address?!? How about the $20,000 informercial that I've still never seen on TV as we were told we would.  What was the ROI? Nothing more than a non-bid deal McMahon used taxpayer's money for to star in a video with Terry Bradshaw from a company in Florida fined by the state's attorney general.

Coming up with ideas are only part of the problem, it takes awareness, commitment and a concerted effort to achieve the objective.  Thousands of people come to this site to raise concerns they see with the community.  They come back knowing that I'll raise the awareness to get the problems addressed.  I've been doing it for four years.  What's avid ATM reader Mayor Bob McMahon been doing for the last 22 years? I can't tell, his Patch article says nothing!

New Store Coming to State Street

It looks like some type of soccer sporting goods store will be setting up shop at the former Sassy Girl location at 300 W. State Street.  The windows are taped up, but where they aren't, they have interesting flatscreen TV's running soccer videos and clips from games.

Not since the famous Bill Battey's, has Media had any thing close to an athletics store.  No word yet on what exactly this store will provide, but looks like they are making pretty good progress for a soon to be announced opening.

Media's Pet Waste Station Overflowing - Media Borough has been notified

10/24/13 9:02am Update: Per email, Media Borough is aware of the situation and taking the necessary steps to correct the problem.

Tonight I received a message that at least one of the pet waste stations in Media have been overflowing for the last three days.  I don't have an answer for why this is happening, but I've reached out to the borough manager, Jeff Smith.

This is a bit odd, as I've not seen this happen before. Let me know if others are experiencing this.  Thanks to the concerned resident that brought this to my attention.

49th Annual Delaware County Halloween Parade on State Street 2pm 10/26 2013

That's right, get you costume ready for the 49th Annual County Halloween Parade on Saturday, October 26.  The event begins at 2pm on State Street, here in downtown Media, PA.  This has not only grown into a holiday tradition, but is a local favorite among families.

We've had local ABC CH 6 Meteorologist, Cecily Tynan host this event the past two years, but no word on her attendance this year or who might be the MC.

Here's a video from last year's parade.

Media in Two Minutes

Dear Readers,

Thanks for stopping by this Sunday morning.  Grab a cup of coffee and sit back, I'll take it from here....

Where local news gets its news - ATM
Very interesting news about GRM this week and also Franklin Mint.  A lot of people are concerned about how this will affect Media and I am too, because it will.  As a candidate for mayor,  I'm on top of these issues and cautiously encouraged by news about the Septa Media/Elwyn Line.  I'll cover that in detail also.  No word from Mayor McMahon.  He had a chance to address this and many other things happening in Media at Thursday's council meeting, but elected not too, or just doesn't know what's going on - like always.
Last week, 5,967 people can to this site to see what I had to say and share.  Even the local news sites can't keep up with ATM.  It's not by luck, it's dedication and commitment to my home town that has A LOT of potential - the formula is simple.  If elected Mayor of Media, I'll apply that same drive to this community, our businesses and the vision I have for making Media one of the best places to live in America.
Thanks!

Media Film Festival Returns to Media Theatre
This had been a point of contention of mine for years: How can you have a film festival and it not be in the Media Theatre?  Well, looks like those days are over with next year's festival going back to the theatre in April 2014.  Nice job by both the Media Theatre and Media's Arts Council.

Penncrest Football goes 7-1
That's a pretty impressive record no matter how you look at it.  Congratulations to the players, coaches, cheerleaders, band and all the others who contribute.  You've all done a great job and I've never seen a community prouder of their football team.  PENNCREST PROUD!  My hat's off to everyone!
Media Youth Center - Thunderbird Dinner
My earliest recollections of a T-Bird (aka Super Chicken)
I owe an apology here. After many months, maybe longer, I happened to look at my spam filter on my gmail account.  Low and behold, there were many emails from the Media Youth Center that I never saw.  I'll get MYC updates back online here at ATM.

Anyway, it's that time of year a again which can only mean the WORLD FAMOUS MYC Thunderbird Dinner!  It's called this, because at one time someone won a Ford Thunderbird.  The first dinner was held in 1958 and has been hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Bill & Lorraine Gross ever since.  That's pretty cool!

Septa's Media/Elwyn Line - UPDATE
WTH, Let's get this fixed!
I know a lot of people are saying this is going to be a close vote in favor of the PA Transportation Bill, that will among other things, fund the Media/Elwyn line; but I'm not done with this yet.  Later today I'm meeting with legislators to see where everything is, what more may be needed and when this vote will take place.  It appears a vote could come as early as this week.

Was anything said about this situation by Media Borough Council at Thursday's meeting?  Doubtful.  Perhaps they are still discussing when the next letter should be mailed out.

For You Speed Freaks!
That was meant in the non-controlled substance context, unless that also includes nitro methane.  Anyway Hannum's Harley Davidson had a two-wheeled rocketship on display yesterday. It goes about 200mph and gets 8 gallons to the mile. (Yes, you read that right).  Essentially, it's a controlled explosion that rides on one wheel for 900 feet and does the 1/4mile in 7 seconds.  What intrigued me was what looked like a kevlar strap wrapped around the engine.   The driver told me, as though it wasn't any big deal, that it's there as a precaution to prevent the pistons from blowing off the heads and hitting him in the chest. Oh, really? So aside from being possibly blown apart, set on fire and having a fist-full of metal stuck in your chest, I couldn't really see any reason to not give it a try.

Noise Complaints on State Street
This has been a problem by the the corner of State and Olive Streets, but looks to have gotten worse.  I've received numerous complaints of loud music and loud crowds.  I even got an email about this this morning.  A couple things I would recommend: 1) Call the police, 2) Notify your landlord. 3) Email Borough Manager, Jeff Smith at jasmith@mediaborough.com

Third Street Bridge
There will be news about this in the next week or two.  Surprisingly, not a word was mentioned by Council President, Brian Hall and Media Borough Council about the appeal hearing that took place two weeks ago.   I'll sit this one out.  They can share with the community the latest debacle, since they created it.

BIG CHANGES for Granite Run Mall and Media
If you saw the sketches of last week's Granite Run Mall Site Plan, you know they mean business.  BIG BUSINESS.   I'll have a lot more about this in the coming weeks, but this creates an interesting ripple effect for Media.  First off, Media retail and even the restaurants will now be challenged with competitive location that'll have more selection, ample parking, marketing budgets and a built to order town that Media hasn't had to compete with in a long time.  This from a group who is well financed and has the track record of making developments like this work.  And work very well.  If you've talked to the business owners in Media, you'll hear for the most part retail is struggling and operating close to margin; restaurants and bars complain there are too many already.  Speaking of which, another business on State Street will be closing.

Secondly, I can't help but think Trader Joe's now needs to make a decision on whether to make plans to stay in Media or look elsewhere.  Currently, the Media store is only ~5,000sqf, which is a 1/3 of the size of their newer stores.  With a very bad parking situation, TJ's could be a big draw for the developers at GRM or possibly the Franklin Mint Site that is now beginning to look for tenants.  It's no secret TJ's has been shopping around for another property.  Whether it's for another store or to move out of Media entirely, it remains to be seen, but now they have some decisions to think about. And so does Media.

Borough Council Candidate, Lisa Johnson not telling the whole story
I have a problem with candidates for borough council walking around purposely leaving issues off their literature thinking that the voters will fall for generalizations like "thoughtful ideas and solutions" and "roll up my sleeves" as if that means anything.  I ran into candidate Lisa Johnson yesterday who is against the Wawa project due to traffic and wants to keep Third Street Bridge closed.  That's fine, but at least have the courage to standup for what you believe in.  That's leadership. That's transparency.  Both of which have been missing from borough council and apparently from a few candidates.

BikeFest, ChiliFest, OktoberFest....it's all here today!

hannumshd.com
If you're into motorcycles or the Harley Davidson lifestyle, swing on over to Hannum's HD by the Granite Run Mall.  They are having a big event today that's made up of a host of different categories.  With plenty of bikes, merchandise, crafts, BBQ and chili, it's shaping up to be a nice get together.  What could possibly go wrong with a mechanical bull setup in the parking lot?  Or a motorcycle that goes 196mph and guzzles 2 gallons of nitro methane in 7 seconds?  This is a crowd that likes to live on the edge.

If you stop by, there is plenty of parking at the Kohl's parking lot.

This is no bull!

Former Gov. Ed Rendell was in Media today to help support the financing for Septa's Media/Elwyn Line

Ed Rendell was in Media today on the courthouse steps expressing the need to support the PA transportation bill that includes financing for the Septa Media/Elwyn Line.  He went on to say the we have the votes for this passage.  However, just don't sit back just yet.  Make sure you contact you local legislatures to let them know how vital this line is for Media and the surrounding community.

Laugh-A-Lot at Spamalot!

I know, I know.....people have been raving about the great Media Theatre production, Spamalot going on now.  If you haven't yet seen it, it goes until Nov 3rd; so come out and see what everyone is talking about.  As an added bonus, you'll get to experience one of the nicest theaters around, right here in Media, PA.

Here's a well done video clip promoting the show.

Septa's Media/Elwyn Line and Media Trolley - A Bi-Partisan Effort

It's going to take a lot more than some of us to raise awareness for the Media/Elwyn Line, it's going to take all of us!  I've been trying to spend what little time I have to see which legislators in the area are for this Transportation Bill and who is against it.  As of this week, Representative Barrar was known to be leading against this legislation that included Septa funding.  Tom Killion (168th District) is a strong advocate for this bill and has been working to secure votes.

Today Philly.com reported on this story with comments from both parties on the importance of working together to get this through.  The vote for the bill may happen very soon, maybe in the next week or so.  Make time and reach out to your local legislator to let them know that our region relies on this commuter service!

Failing to pass this bill would also have direct consequence on the Media 101 Trolley.  As stated below, trolley lines would be replaced by buses if the cuts are allowed to go through.
SEPTA announced it plans to cut nine of its 13 rail lines, close a subway line and convert all trolley routes to bus lines unless it gets more state funding. In Harrisburg, the Senate has passed the bill that would provide the money. The House is expected to vote soon.

Granite Run Mall Developer BET to show Site Plan at Middletown Planning Meeting Nov 4th

It didn't take long for things to start moving regarding the Granite Run Mall.  This Nov 4th, BET the owner/developer will present their conceptual site plans to the Middletown Planning Committee.

Franklin Mint Developers Settle Lawsuits and Begin to Reach out To Potential Tenants

The hits just keep on coming for Middletown Township.  Not only were conceptual sketches and a site plan released for the GRM property yesterday, but just down the street the long stalled Franklin Mint project had a lawsuit break through that has restarted the effort.  Per an article in the delcotimes, the developers are now moving forward and actively reaching out to potential tenants.
McKee said the partnership will start reaching out to potential tenants for the mixed-use development immediately and likely bring in another partner or consultant to help with the commercial component of the plan, which had been Wolfson’s responsibility.  www.delcotimes.com

Breaking - Proposed Site Plan and Sketches Released for Granite Run Mall w/video

Earlier today Metro Commercial Real Estate released a proposed site plan for the upcoming make over of the Granite Run Mall.  These renderings are very interesting, as they reflect the changes I was told of by someone close to the matter last Friday.

No time-frame released yet, nor is anything final as it is a proposed plan, but these changes are drastically different from what's there now.  Looks like the anchor stores Sears, JCPenny and Boscovs, or at least those structures remain, with the "mall" portion being torn down and made into open air venues.

Please read if you ride the Media/Elwyn Line and expect to in the future.

Media/Elwyn Line Commuters,

If you rely on the Media/Elwyn line for your commute to University City, 30th Street Station, Center City or beyond, you'll understand the importance of keeping this service running without disruption.  I know I certainly do and am in the process of contacting regional lawmakers to express the importance of this line and the need to support the PA Transportation Bill that will fund critical repair.

Last weekend I contacted Media's State Representative, Tom Killion who told me he supports this bill and is working to get others to do the same.  During that conversation, I learned that State Representative, Steve Barrar is NOT, for what he has stated as an unfair increase in the gasoline and diesel tax. “We’re talking about a 28.5 cent increase on gas and a 38.5 cent increase on diesel,” he said. “Can you imagine what [the increase in diesel] is going to do to the cost of deliveries?” CBS Philly website.
More Traffic if Media/Elwyn Line isn't repaired

I certainly understand his position, but if this highly used passenger line is shut down, the overflow of people who would then have to drive downtown would make a bad situation on the Blue Route and I-95 that much worse....if you can imagine that.  Not to mention the added congestion on secondary roads leading out to highways.  In addition, a lot of people in his district also rely on this line, which I think also needs to be made clear.  Less cars, less traffic, less fuel......easy math.

Two years ago the parking lot at the Elwyn train station was enlarged to accommodate more commuters, a lot of which are coming from the western part of the county.  It's also the reason why Septa has plans(someday) to build a station and parking garage at the Wawa location by Franklin Mint. Septa is becoming relied on more, not less!  As a matter of fact, it should be restored to go all the way out to West Chester. More on that in the future.

The most immediate need for repair, as stated by Septa, is the trestle that spans Crum Creek and links Swarthmore to Wallingford. I had to look at this for myself and took a hike down there to see what I could find.  I'm not a structural engineer, but a few pictures illustrate the need for repair work.  I've never seen concrete footings that hold up a bridge, bound by what looks like a patch work of metal rods.

I plan to a contact Representative Barrar to discuss with him how vitally important this form of transportation is.  In the mean time, you may want to reach out to him too:

Runners in Media need to Lighten Up!

I've chosen not to join the many who run throughout Media for exercise during the dark hours.  A misplaced step on uneven terrain or a slip on the newly fallen leaves would be a catastrophic injury for me. I'm the type that can be easily injured from a bad nights sleep, so understand where I'm coming from.
Make sure you stand out when running in Media during evening hours!

For those who courageously run on in the dark, please consider wearing a reflective band or illuminating device of some sort.  I saw a bunch of people running around, and those I could see with reflective material gave me pause while in my vehicle as they approached an intersection. Unfortunately, a lot of people in Media just roll through stop signs, so anything you can do to be seen helps the driver TREMENDOUSLY!

If you need a place to go to get geared up for night running, swing by and see Karen at Bryn Mawr Running on State Street.  They have everything you need.

Keep running and have a great time!

A Bright Spot for Media......Literally!

If you haven't yet seen the new neon signs promoting Media Pizza and Grill on State Street, don't worry, you can't miss it.  I believe they went up today. It lights up the whole street, like something out of Las Vegas or maybe a boardwalk restaurant in NJ.  It makes everything else looked closed.

I don't know if these things come with a dimmer, but WOW is it bright. Luckily they don't blink!

Double Decker Pizza Applies for Transfer of Liquor License to Media

Double Decker Pizza Applies for License
It was bound to happen sooner or later, because you can't have just pizza without beer.  Pinocchio's does a booming business with this model and now Double Decker Pizza is joining suit.  Media's newest restaurant is making plans to bring a liquor license to their location at 415 E. Baltimore Avenue.

A public hearing is set for October 17th 7:30pm at council chambers to allow the borough to hear public comments about this request.  The consideration for the request will be held at the normally scheduled borough council meeting.

I don't believe Media Borough ever definitely set a cap for liquor licenses in the borough, as they look at and approve each and every one based on a case-by-case evaluation.  Meaning, if you operate like a wholesome, well run business in their eyes, you'll probably get one.  As for something like a Hooters, you might have a problem.
