Skating on Ridley Creek by the Media Waterworks

Someone mentioned to me that way back when Ridley Creek always seemed to be frozen over.  I knew what he was talking about because I was right there with him when we skated on it years ago as kids.  That was a time when you could put on your skates and play hockey all afternoon after school.  Skates didn't fit? No problem, we still had Bill Battey's Sporting Goods that was the premiere place in the area for trading and getting a new pair of blades.  Pucks, sticks and pads, they had it all and lots of it too.  Come to think of it, we never really wore the pads, as the rule was the puck couldn't leave the ice.  Fair enough, we were there to skate.

Growing up, ice skating was very territorial.  Upper Providence kids had their secret spots, Media had theirs, and Middletown had Linvilla and what was considered the  "big leagues," Glen Loch lake at the bottom of Mt. Alverno Road.  Big games went on down at Glen Loch as it was a vast area with a lot of enthusiasts making sure it was shoved and thoroughly prepared.

We spent a fair amount of time at the Media waterworks also.  It had a decent space, was close to home and had an adventurous aspect which included a long stretch that paralleled Ridley Creek Road.  I don't know how far it actually was, but it felt like you were skating for a long time up the creek towards Rose Tree Road.  The ice started to thin out in that area, so I never made it very far, but is sure added to the adventure.

Anyway, it was good to drive up Baltimore Pike and see people skating on Ridley Creek last Sunday. So good, I stopped to take some pictures.  I haven't been skating in a few year and don't have skates, but had Bill Battey's been still around, I may have just made the effort to get out their again.   Winter's not over yet, there's still a chance.

Enjoy.

Cars burglarized at Ridley Creek State Park

As reported by the delcotimes.com, cars were burglarized last Thursday at the parking lot on Barren Road by the park's entrance.  The perpetrators broke windows on three cars to gain entry and take items that were left in plain view.

These rash of break-ins at the park seem to happen from time to time.  Back in April 2010, similar incidents were reported, though the suspects were arrested.

As a precaution, leave you valuables home and keep items out of sight.

Media in Two Minutes - 1/27/2013

The Cold Weather
With the very cold weather last week came a little snow.  Maybe two inches, but enough to make driving a little tricky on Friday evening.  This time, a broom was more handy than a shovel at removing the powdery accumulation.

I remember seeing a Media Borough ordinance somewhere at sometime that stated homeowners and businesses are required to have their walkways cleared within 24hrs after the snow stops.  I've never seen that enforced, but probably a good rule of thumb in case anyone was wondering.

Media Girls Softball

Over the weeks I've been posting registration and meeting notices for Media Rugby and Little League, but we also have Media Girls Softball.  Their season is starting soon.  Registration and important updates can be found out their website: www.mediasoftball.org.

Wegmans, Trader Joe's, Acme
A few weeks back I wrote an article on the recent sale of Acme corporation.  I also noted some of the challenges Media's Trader Joe's is facing also.  It appears the area grocery store landscape had some more interesting news this week.

Wegmans in Concord?
In the Delcotimes.com it was reported that Concord Township is looking at the idea of a Wegmans out by Rt. 202 and Baltimore Pike.  As much as people like Wegmans, and with a WholeFoods in close proximity, that could be a game changer in terms of a grocery shopping destination.  If that goes through, which I think it will, that will put a Costco, Home Depot, Whole Foods, Target and possibly Wegmans all  within a few miles of one another.

As for Trader Joe's, I've heard from two different sources that they were checking out a location at Dutton Mill Road and Pennell.  Not sure if that was for a new location, or an additional location, but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere at the moment.

Third Street Bridge - Update
Mayor Bob McMahon and Media Borough Council have talked a good game, but they've done nothing outside of public borough meetings that would indidcate they are even serious about a one-way roadway.  They've not spoken to stakeholders or even leveled with the public about potential deals to remediate this issue. One of Pennsylvania's most dangerous dams, and their only reply, "No comment."

I believe come February 15th when it goes back to the judge, we'll see some movement on this matter.  Proceeding with a two-way roadway, could begin the project immediately.  This is supported by residents, Delaware County, Middletown Township, Upper Providence and ALL of the emergency services.

How are the roads this morning? Not bad

If you're looking to get out and about this morning, you'll be in good shape as far as the roads are.  Mostly wet with a few slick side streets.  Major roadways are fine.

New Home to be built at corner of 6th and Olive Streets

As reported last Sunday, there will be new development at the corner of 6th and Olive Streets.  Based on the real estate listing, a new home is proposed at 30 W 6th Street.  With 4 beds, 3 baths and 2,600 sqf, this will be bigger than the surrounding homes, but based on the drawling, looks to be very nice.  It also appears  another house will be placed on this lot.

Price is listed at $625,000.  For more information, check out the listing.

Prepare for the Arctic Blast - Delaware County prepares cold weather programs

Delaware County prepares programs for this week's cold weather
The 2013 winter season seems to be getting off to a late start, but with temperatures struggling to get above freezing today and the rest of the week, it's certainly back in force.  In fact the next few days will be the coldest we've had in sometime.

Be sure to check on your neighbors, elderly and pets.  Also check out the Delaware County site for pertinent updates and programs that deal with extreme weather for the homeless.  Here is an update from Dr. George Avetian, Delaware County Senior Medical Advisor on preparation underway for this week's weather.

Media Boro Council not telling the whole story on 3rd St. Bridge

Third Street Bridge
So much for transparency and leadership you can trust from Media Borough Council.  As I wrote earlier and was verified today on delcotimes.com, Media Borough Council did have an offer on the table regarding a possible deal on the one-way roadway for 3rd Street Bridge.  One that would have required further negotiation, but at least BLCC in good faith towards the community was willing to sit down and discuss.  Turns out,  President Brian Hall and council didn't even address it.  In fact, when asked about it at last Thursday's meeting, Brian refused to discuss it or even confirm it existed.  I also might add, that this council never even notified PennDot that this issue was back in the courts.  Millions of dollars in PennDot funding on the line and this council continues to play more games.

After 17 years, delays costing taxpayers $1 million, and financing being jeopardized for one of Pennsylvania's most dangerous dams; people should really start making this council accountable for the lack of leadership.  Much like what happened with the Super Wawa project, this council, along with Mayor MchMahon, are showing to be unprepared, disorganized and out of touch with residents and businesses of Media.  What's equally concerning, is that this article shows Media Borough Council withholding key information from the public.

Since Media Borough Council isn't interested in a one-way negotiation of any sort, it's now time to move this project forward as the originally proposed two-way roadway.  Supported by many residents, along with RTM School District, Middletown, Upper Providence and local Emergency Services.

Media in Two Minutes - January 20, 2013

It's Media in Two Minutes, a Sunday Morning rundown of the week's events and upcoming notifications.

Ok, Let's Go!

Delaware County Free Flu Shot Clinic
As expected, this was tremendously popular and a well attended event. The clinic was held yesterday at the Penn State Brandwine campus and drew hundreds of people.  One commenter on this site expressed how pleased they were with the operation and organization.  Here's a story about by delcotimes about the Flu Shot Clinic.

For notifications like this and other county events, swing over to the Delaware County Council page on Facebook.

PA Lottery TV Commercial Shoot on State Street
PA Lottery's Commercial Shoot (State St.)
This was a pretty big production, literally.  On Thursday morning, video crews were ascending on State Street to shoot an upcoming video for the PA Lottery.  Earth and State and 320 Market Cafe were set as the backdrop of the shoot.  No word yet on when the commercial will be shown or comment by Pennsylvania's second famous groundhog, Gus.

Steph's Pet Sitting Service
There is no doubt that Media has a an ever increasing dog owner population.  As one, I can say that there are times when you need a pet sitter.  If you're in that category, be sure to check out Steph's Pet Sitting Service.   She is located here in Media and is a registered veterinarian nurse.  With reasonable rates, this is a great, local service.

6th Street Development
The empty lot at the corner of Olive and 6th Street has been vacant for sometime. It looks that a real estate sign has been placed there that will be offering new homes.  I don't know if they'll be town homes or something else, but it looks like there are preparations to begin these homes soon.

Just a few houses up, another lot on 6th Street is being cleared.  Not sure yet what will be placed here, but most likely a town home of some sort.

Media's $20,000 Infomercial
Speaking of commercials, at least the PA lottery group put together what was noticeably a big production for their Thursday's shoot.  But what about Media's Infomercial sold to the town last July via a cold call telemarketer?  No word.  I've still yet to find anyone who has seen the show it's supposed to air on, "Today in America."  Remember, this was a group Mayor Bob McMahon pursued as a good business decision after if was found they had be investigated and fined by the Florida's State Attorney's Office.

This was a $20,000 no bid deal signed by borough council with a Florida company.  This could have been done by local businesses here in Media for A LOT LESS.

Media's Hampered Inn
After 7 years of the Media Hampton Inn development flapping in the wind, where's the borough's leadership?  I doubt they even know what's going on, but based on the conversations I had this week, the outlook isn't looking good for this project.

Construction for Springfield's hotel is well underway, which only adds pressure to the economic viability of constructing a hotel in Media.  Jobs, tax revenue and a boost to the local economy may be in serious jeopardy because much like the Super Wawa, this borough council isn't paying attention or staying on top of issues.

The difference with Springfield is that they are playing an active role in their development projects, while Media sits around and wonders when a hotel will ever be built or when or what will become the gateway of Media.  A Big Difference.

Third Street Bridge Debacle
In late 2011 the bridge was financed, lawsuits settled and most everything was ready to go.  Here we are in 2013 and we're not sure about the financing, it's back in court and Council President, Brian Hall makes ridiculous statements about not being able to acknowledge or comment on discussions they had with BLCC and Delaware County over the bridge.  Truth is, even after again being asked by the judge to work this out, Media Borough Council has done NOTHING.

ZERO Leadership on Third St Bridge. 17 years of incompetence continues.
After 17 years and having one of Pennsylvania's most hazardous dam situations, and this is what we get? WE ARE GOING BACKWARDS! This repair of the bridge with a two-way roadway could begin immediately, but instead Hall, Davidson and Robinson continue to waste time and run up taxpayer cost because they feel preferred treatment to their friends and family (i.e Friends of Glen Providence Park) is more important than the safety of the 5,300 rest of us in town.

Building Bridges in Delaware County, Except for Media, PA

Results matter and so does effective leadership.  Here's a story of a similar situation in Delaware county where communities have been faced with repairing a bridge.  Similar cost, similar funding, similar need, but much different outcomes between Media/UP and Folcroft/Glenolden.  Not because of money, but because Media Borough Council is influenced by five self appointed people who shamelessly used the leverage of a county park to advance there own personal agendas.

Folcroft and Glenolden of Delaware County, PA are proudly celebrating the completion of a new bridge that was done 3 months ahead of schedule, while we here in Media incurred a million dollar increase in the cost to fix our bridge at taxpayer expense and are no closer to getting it done then we were 17 years ago!

A bridge opening in Delaware County, but after 17 years, not one in Media, PA
The Grant Avenue Bridge was re-opened with a dedication by Delaware County Council Friday morning, bridging a gap between Folcroft and Glenolden boroughs since April.

Spanning the Muckinipattis Creek, the $2.6 million bridge replaces the original that was constructed in 1928 complete with a new pedestrian walkway, wider travel lanes and updated drainage facilities.

Construction of the bridge finished three months earlier than expected.

Police and fire crews were the first to cross the bridge in a symbolic connection of the municipalities.

Funds to demolish and re-build the bridge were provided from federal and state funds, providing 80 and 15 percent to the project respectively. The final five percent came from the county’s liquid tax fund.
Delaware County Facebook Page
I particularly like the reference: "Police and fire crews were the first to cross the bridge in a symbolic connection of the municipalities."  Our Police and Fire crews weren't even given the important opportunity to speak on such a matter. In fact, Media's council lashed out and vilified adjacent municipalities for involvement in the 3rd St. bridge!

Here's what ineffective leadership and political games brought Media, PA:
  • In Media, our Fire and Police departments were prevented by our Borough Council from formally speaking on the matter.
  • Our RTM school district who supports a two way bridge, received a call from a member of borough council angrily protesting the school boards involvement. WHY?
  • Three councilmen signed a petition for a greenway from a group that HIJACKED a community park and used it for nothing more than their own special interests.  How can one group speak on behalf of a county park, when everyone has equal right and opinion regarding it? Debbie Krull, Co-Chair of the local party even campaigned for their cause.
  • Borough Council was found to have stacked the committee to support a special interest agenda.  The Co-Chair of the CAC committee resigned and wrote a letter formally explaining such.  Borough Council never revealed the important reason of the letter to the public.
  • Councilman Kent Davidson who lives 20 yrds from the proposed project, is not only accused of conflict of interest, but was found to be providing a undisclosed website through a company that he owns that supported his own political agenda and that of a the special interest group whose petition he signed. A $3.4 million dollar project and Media has this nonsense?
  • Borough Council was served with a "Contempt of Court" petition for breaking existing agreement with Delaware County and BLCC.  After 45 days of the ruling, they've done noting to remediate the issue with stake holders.  It goes back to court mid-February 2013.
  • Borough Council told us that the PennDot funding for this project was secure, when PennDot didn't even know this was back in court due to the petition brought against Borough Council.
  • Borough Council used a misleading "Push" survey that didn't include costs associated with bridge designs or the context of consequence. A two-way bridge, was compared to a breached dam, that was compared to a greenway, etc.  Trouble is, the "two way bridge" wasn't disclosed as being funded for, while misleading people to think the other options were, they weren't, and possibly more expensive.  No one was made aware of that who took the survey.   It also didn't discuss a legal binding lawsuit that stipulated a two way bridge.  With that logic, a Ferrari would cost as much as a Hyundia and you would never get a speeding ticket!
  • Lack of leadership over the last 17 years has driven the cost up by $1 million dollars to repair bridge.  It could have been repaired for $1.5 million, as opposed to the current cost of $3.4 million.....and counting.
  • Mayor Bob McMahon tells people on the street his desire for a two way road, but fails to state the position at Borough Council meetings.  When purportedly asked why he didn't speak up, he states he wasn't asked. In the last three months, he has since changed his mind and supports a one-way option, after 16 years of supporting the previous setup, two-way.
  • At a council meeting, one councilman angrily lashed out at the BLCC, RTM School District, Middletown Township and Upper Providence for essentially "Meddling in Media" affairs.  Shockingly, they now have the audacity to seek needed funding from Upper Providence for a new library.
Democrat, Republican, Independent; we all deserve better local, cooperative government that is HELD ACCOUNTABLE!  and represents EVERYONE FAIRLY

Third Street Bridge Update: It may come down to the 1996 design report

17 years and counting
From what I learned, today's meeting with Judge Proud didn't produce any ground breaking, definitive direction on the Third Street Bridge.  What did happen will include the parties returning to court on February 15th with prepared briefs.

Based on what was discussed in court, It appears the outcome of all this may likely come down to the Schnabel design report created back in 1996.  Back then, there was clear intention of a two-way roadway and no talk of a one-way option.  The one-way option only came to light recently.  Apparently is was Media Borough's so called one-way compromise, but who was it a compromise with?  Not BLCC, the County, RTM School District and emergency services, but a compromise with a handful of people who self appointed themselves as representatives of a county park.  They also going to tell us when and how to visit the park that everyone should have equal say in?

During today's visit with Judge Proud, Media Borough had nothing prepared despite the fact that BLCC in good faith made multiple attempts to discuss the issue with Media Borough over the course of the last 45 days.   Due to the severity of the situation, both as a physical danger and possible loss of funding, BLCC initiated contact on a one way roadway in lieu of maintenance and responsibilities for their share of the bridge.

What does Media Borough Council want?  They didn't come to the table to negotiate, they didn't even respond to a possible one-way roadway negotiation that they have used to hold this whole project up. They tell the community one thing, while behind the scenes they again do nothing to move this forward.  17 YEARS!  Is this all one big game to wait it out so it goes back in the courts and funding eventually expires?  As far as they are concerned, what they have now at Third Street isn't a two-way or one-way road, it's their version of a "Greenway."

Media's safety and fiduciary responsibilities take a back seat to Borough Council's Political games and cronyism.  So much for transparency and leadership you can trust.

Media, Pa Local, Brendan O'Riordan to Showcase Baltimore Pike's Golden Mile

Congratulations to Media local, Brendan O'Riordan and his team for embarking on yet another video project about Delaware County.  In a follow-up to their 2010 documentary, "The Bazaar of All Nations" in Clifton Heights, this effort will focus on the "Golden Mile" that stretched throughout Springfield township on Baltimore Pike.

The Golden Mile was never actually a specific geographical coordinate, but the name given to many automobile dealerships and the businesses that supported a once thriving industry between Springfield, PA and Clifton Heights.  This at one time included Ferraro Cadillac, Springfield Ford, Charlie's Hamburgers, Alpine Inn and even places like the world famous, Stanley Kup bar.

The project's in its infancy stage with no release date announced yet.  However, check out the great article in delcotimes this week about the video and how the idea came about.  As for Media, Brendan also wrote a great article about the history of the Media Trolly.

Media in Two Minutes - 1/13/13

Media in Two Minutes:

New Book by Media Resident, Dr. Sam Lemon

Media Town Talk had an excellent article about Media resident, Dr. Sam Lemon and his new book "Go Stand On The Rock"

This book eloquently captures the struggles and achievement of his ancestors dating back to the 1800's.  This inspirational story isn't just any book, but a look into the past of a family that still calls Media home.  When people say they are proud of Media, PA, it really starts with great families such as Dr. Lemon's who had such an important impact on our town.

Congratulations, Dr. Lemon!

It's Registration Time for Local Athletics
Be sure to check out the schedules listed for Media Little League and Babe Ruth.  For Media Little League, the first day of registration will be on January 19th at the Media Borough Community Center.  For Babe Ruth League, you'll have to download a copy of the registration form and drop off at Media Youth Center's snack bar or send to group's location on the form.  Here's a link to a previous post that includes dates, website links and other information.

Also, Media Youth Rugby will be having a meeting January 17th, 7pm at Media Borough Hall.  A special THANKS to Matt Heavens for providing this information and helping with this cause.  I'll post more information about this as it becomes available.

Foxy Brown comes to town
No, not that "Foxy Brown," but the one I saw run down E. 6th Street at 5:20am this morning.  I don't think foxes bother cats too much, but probably prefer squirrels, mice and last night leftovers in uncovered trashcans.  Bon Appettite

Discarding Christmas Trees
If you live in Media Borough and still have you Christmas tree, it can be left curbside to be picked up by the Media Highway Dept.

Is Media putting Opera on the Map.......or is that the other way around?
Either way, it is great to hear a world class opera production will be coming exclusively to Media, PA.  I look forward to attending and think this will be great for the town.

Third Street Bridge - UPDATE
Back in November 2012, Judge Proud, after receiving a contempt of court petition filed against Media Borough,  requested that the three parties (Media Boro, BLCC, Delco) work out the differences over Third Street Bridge.  In that time, BLCC in good faith submitted an offer to Media Borough Council, which didn't even get addressed.  It even included a one-way design option.

Much like the Super Wawa embarrassment, we again see a total lack of leadership by Mayor Bob McMahon and borough council.  Councilman Paul Robinson complains about how badly written the original agreement was, but yet when he and council has a opportunity to do something about it, as they've had over the last 45 days, NOTHING gets done.

Have we just wasted another year(17th) and incurred more costs towards the bridge at the hands of the mayor and borough council?  To have the audacity to continue to hold this project up, they at least should have defended their position.

Is Media's Trader Joe's about to make a move?

With today's news reporting that Malvern based Acme Markets has been sold to new owners, I would have to imagine a bit of uncertainty now hovers over the future of the "supermarket" business in the Media area.  With cut-throat competition being felt from big box stores who now offer full range supermarkets, the playing field has drastically changed.  Acme knows that and has been embattled to improve quality, selection and price while still trying to make a profit on razor thin margins.  But even with new owners, can they still economically compete using the same model in an ever changing market?  In my opinion, the Granite Run Acme looks to be strong, however, I'm not so sure about the Acme in Media.
A rendering of a newer 13,000 sqf Trader Joe's
Both Target and Walmart, just outside of Media,  have also entered the highly competitive food business and it's no secret they offer low margin food to get people into their stores.  If you've compared prices, you'll see Acme comes in at a disadvantage.  Even an analyst who follows this market was quoted in the article as saying, "Philadelphia will continue to be one of the worst markets for profits for grocery stores in the country."  The reason: too many stores in the region.

So what about Trader Joe's?  With a 5,000 to 6,000 sqf. store that they currently occupy in the Media Armory, they too may be feeling a squeeze.  Typically these stores run in the 13,000 to 15,000 sqf. range and are built that way to take advantage of increased sales volume, while offering an ideal shopping experience.  Trader Joe's directly competes with Whole Foods who recently built a store in Glen Mills that has a bar, eatery, culinary demonstrations and a lot of parking.   Media's TJ's is not only vastly smaller than that Whole Foods , but is considerably smaller compared to a typical TJ's layout.

Ten years ago when Trader Joe's came to Media, it was a different company than it is today.  It's bigger, expanding and looking to compete on a larger scale that now includes the need for bigger stores.  With a lease reported to end with Media Borough in 2014 and no real ability to expand floor space or fix parking at the Media Armory, don't be surprised if this company starts quietly shopping around for a bigger location.  An alternate location could very well be in Media, but for a new store in the 13,000 sqf range, there aren't many places where that could go in the borough.

Springfield will have a hotel this summer, while Media may not have one at all

Nothing lasts forever, especially when it comes to companies looking at hotel development opportunities in Media, Pa.  This isn't specific to just Media, but after 7 years since announcing a Hampton Inn; competition and financing had changed dramatically and that may present a big problem.

As reported in the Wall Street Journal last month, developers who have undertaken hotel projects similar to Media's Hampton Inn project are finding it extremely challenging in securing the needed financing.  During the height of this type of development, which was back in mid-2000, lenders often financed 80% of the cost of construction.  Today, that falls to about 60% making for a big gap that isn't nearly as attractive to developers who will have to seek alternative capital or carry higher debt.
Springfield's Hotel is expected to be completed this summer 2013

These types of hotel are still being built, but the whole developmental model has changed to become something more of a public/private cooperative.  As found by the Wall Street Journal, local governments have become more inclined to offer tax incentives to make these projects feasible and profitable.  In the article, one administrator was even quoted at saying that their 107-room Four Points Hotel by Sheraton couldn't be built or done without the city's assistance.  Another developer of a Hampton Inn and Suites in Owensboro, KY went on to explain that state tax incentives that could amount to more than $5 million made the $20 million project possible.  Perhaps most compelling is a quote from one group who stated, "These things are largely uneconomic without significant public incentive."

What's interesting is that in addition to financing, Media's Hampton Inn will have to compete with a Springfield hotel that received a county tax incentive through a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) agreement.  Essentially, a tax break.  Since Springfield's hotel is being built on non-taxable township land, the agreement was considered appropriate by the county, developer and the township.  The three story, 92-room hotel will not only bring yearly lease payments and a 3% occupancy tax, mercantile and business taxes, but jobs and services that are expected to help the area.  The hotel is expected to be completed in the summer of 2013.
After 7 years, Media's Hotel is no closer towards getting done than 3rd St. Bridge

!

In 2012 we had a potential of getting a Super Wawa, that didn't require tax incentives and would have brought 35 jobs, millions in development fees and a steady tax revenue. Problem was, Mayor Bob McMahon and Borough Council weren't organized enough to further explore the matter and Wawa retracted their proposal.  With development projects in this day and age, that might be looked upon as a golden opportunity squandered.  At this time, there are no proposed alternatives or ideas for the site.

After reading the Wall Street Journal's article and seeing the situation in our area, it looks like what is really needed is effective municipal communication, cooperation and leadership that's out in front of these projects and setting expectations.  Can Media's Hampton still be built and prove profitable after seven years, especially against a new Springfield hotel with tax breaks? Time will tell, but in the meantime while local officials in Springfield are collectively working together to have rooms ready by summer, Mayor Bob McMahon and Council President, Brian Hall don't have the slightest idea what's going on with Media's Hotel.

So What's the Big Event Coming to Media, PA in 2013? A Cultural Experience Unlike Any Other!

Rome, Paris, Berlin, London and now Media, PA.  That's right, Media will be on the world stage for the American premiere of a new Italian opera (IAGO), which will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi at the Media Theatre in May 2013.
Soprano Performer, Sharon Zhai

The group recently had an international competition in Saluzzo Italy, not far from where I visited this summer, where Sharon Zhai was chosen as the leading soprano for the opera. She is Chinese and will come to Media to sing the role of Desdemona

I'm not sure the dates have been posted yet, but check back for announcements or visit mediatheatre.org for upcoming information.  The show/s won't last long and once concluded, Sharon and the opera will be traveling back to Italy for additional performances.

In the meantime, I've been contacted by the group about reporting on their upcoming visit.  I look forward to that and am excited to share what will be a HUGE cultural event for Media!

The Birth of Opera:
The birth of opera is thought to have officially occur in 1600, when Jacopo Peri presented his opera  "Eurydice" at the wedding of Henry IV of France to Marie de Medici. (at left Rubens shows Henry IV receiving her portrait). The Florentine Camerata, a group of well known humanists, poets, musicians and intellectuals of which Peri was a member, believed the new form, an amalgamation of all arts, might heal their tainted society. In Peri's words, "To return to the Greek tradition of melody and naturally inflected text where singing imitates spoken language. I believe in the example of the Greek tragedies which adapted music to language."

Recognizing the Great job the State Police and local law enforcement do for our communities

A BIG Thanks to our local law enforcement!
There are so many things that happen in our daily lives, that we can sometimes take a lot for granted.  One thing I don't and wanted to recognize, is the noticeable presence today of our State Police in the Middletown Township area.

At 4:30pm this afternoon I saw a State Police cruiser patrolling the parking lot and grounds of Penncrest High school.  I'm sure it was nothing more than a routine patrol, but good to know they are on top of things for our schools and communities.

To the Middletown State Police "Media" Barracks and all local law enforcement, THANK YOU!

Media in Two Minutes - 1/6/12 This week's highlights of Media you won't find anywhere else.

Happy New Year to everyone.  I hope 2013 is getting off to a great start!

Ok, it's Media in Two Minutes.......Let's go!

Lou Scott Memorial Scholarship Awarded:
Louis Scott III
It may not get the front page on the local newspaper, but it'll get it here.  In these parts, the name Lou Scott is legendary.  Not only did he make a positive impact on his students at Penncrest Highschool as Principal, but for many in the community as well.  Last week Bibi Kautar accepted the Lou Scott Memorial award.  Congratulations!

How many animals can be saved in a year.......A LOT!
The Delco SPCA announced this week that they saved 3,139 animals in 2012!  That number resonates loudly and is greatly appreciated!  Keep up the great work.  And for those looking for something to do, consider helping out at your local SPCA to save even more lives in 2013!.

Media Motor has moved to Painter Street in Media, PA Yesterday I wrote a post about what happened to Media Motors on Baltimore Ave.  The update I got is that they have moved to Painter Street in Media.  They are in the same building as Suburban Motors.  I don't yet know what will happen to the building they vacated.

Williamson Trade School - President Guy S. Gardner This school located on Rt. 352 in Middletown has a long tradition of excellence and community involvement.  The graduates of this privately funded institution have gone on to be well known and respected in their trades.  Some of the best carpenters, masons, painters and electricians you can hire have been taught here.  Here's a great story in the Main Line Today about Williamson President, Guy S. Gardner.

Mayor Bob McMahon and Borough Council's lack of leadership reaching new lows: Two articles this week, one of which was mine, were published by the Daily Times over Borough council's mismanagement of the proposed Super Wawa.
Wawa heads for the exits

Letter: Media council short-sighted when it comes to big picture

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Thankful for ‘Super Wawa’ consideration

A BIG ITALIAN EVENT IS COMING TO MEDIA!!! I was contacted yesterday by what will be Media's BIGGEST INTERNATIONAL SHOW......IN THE REGION!  I'll get to that a little later in the week or so, but it's an honor Media, PA has be chosen for such a special event.

Proposed Hampton Inn Site - 1/5/13 Torn down sign - broken glass
Media's Biggest and most Dangerous Eyesore.
Police Tape as Security?!?!?
The residents on Pennock Place and others in the sourthern part of Media, shouldn't have to keep guessing what's going to happen at the site of the proposed Hampton Inn.  For seven years the abandoned building has not only sat there, but has been vandalized by lack of securityI was there yesterday and the place looks is flat out dangerous.  In fact, it's a fire hazzard waiting to happen..   No fencing, no security and the sign that was covered up has been recently torn down with glass everywhere.   This is what I'm talking about:  If I can take the time to find out what's going on with this property, then so should Borough Council.  If Council President, Brian Hall has time to drive around and critique business logos on awnings, and Mayor Bob McMahon time to raise money for a 5 minute infomercial, then I would suggest they both make a few phone calls to get answers on this project.

Edgemont and Jefferson Street Development Update
Condos proposed for Jefferson & Edgemont site.
The owner cleared this property pretty quickly back in October, but looks like it'll be at least until May 2013 until something starts happening here.  Based on what I know, that timeframe may even be a bit ambitious.
