Media in Two Minutes 12-30-12 - Happy New Year!

As we close out the year, 2012 will mean different things to different people.  We saw new businesses and restaurants come to Media, while others left.  It was a big year for schools:  Nativity BVM closed  after 100 years in the community, while Media Elementary moved across the street to take up a temporary residence.  We had a visit from Super Storm Sandy in October with the effects still being felt by some.  Media Little league showed us what hard work and dedication is by going on to be the Pennsylvania State Champions.   Third Street bridge moves into it's 17th year with still no start date and very little direction, while Media enters year seven wondering if the Hampton Inn will ever be built.

On to this week's Media in Two Minutes........Let's GO!

Media, PA New Year's Eve 2013 - Ball Drop
Santa may have moved to the courthouse steps, but the NYE Ball Drop will be where its always been - 1 West State Street in front of Spasso's.  Entertainment will start around 11pm and music will be provided by Philly Gumbo.  They've done this gig many times and do a great job.  Also, Media's own Matt Heavens will be the Emcee.

One thing that really becomes popular on this night is taxi cab service.  Here's a list of providers I have put together.

Big news for 2013?
We will no doubt see some interesting moves in the new year.  One very well may be a new coffee shop on State Street.  Perhaps even bigger will be interesting developments with Media's Trader Joe's.

What do I do with my Christmas Tree?
If you live in Media Borough, you can leave you tree curbside and the Highway Department will pick it up.  They don't really make a formal announcement about this, but traditionally it's been done on trash days.

Where's the Hampton Inn?
If you're a regular reader of the Wall Street Journal, you may have seen a recent article they had that closely parallels the challenges small communities face with hotels.  In fact, they mentioned Hampton Inn by name and some of the issues developers are now facing that they didn't have six years ago.  I'll have a story about this in the next week, but developers are finding that lenders are committing to a lot less of the overall financing of these projects.  One developer was quoted as saying it would be crazy for anyone to do one of these projects with out municipal help.  Interesting.

Third Street Bridge - Update
From what I understand, this will go back in front of the judge sometime in mid-January.  Since the time of the 30 day ruling, Media Borough council has had NO meaningful conversations with the stakeholders to work out a solution.  I do know there was one option on the table from a stakeholder, but nothing came of it.

Again, where is the leadership?  Council President Brian Hall, Kent Davidson and Paul Robinson would like everyone to believe at their meetings that things are progressing, when in fact, nothing is getting done.  Apparently, they haven't even been in contact with PennDot who wasn't aware this was back in the courts.

Lastly, when this group says it's now too expense for a two-way roadway, I'd like to remind Hall and Robinson that they served prior terms on Council as VP's back when the bridge could have been fixed for $1.5 million.  It'll now cost at least $3.4 million with costs going up each year.

$7,000 for Electronic Billboard Advertising
Someone brought to my attention that they think it's a waste to advertise Media on an electronic billboard down by the airport.  Apparently, it is facing northbound travelers (away from Media) and is flashed so quickly that the message loses impact.  I'll take a look and see what can be found out.

All the best in 2013!

Media's First Snow and Preparations Underway for NYE!

The first significant snow fall of the year is always special here in Media, PA.  The town's a bit quieter and things seem to move a little slower when we get the frozen stuff.  Today's amount will probably amount to 2 to 4 inches, but enough to bring the shovels, plows and salt trucks out.

Whether you live in town, or afar, people always like to see a video of this event.  In addition, you'll see that preparations are underway at 1 West State Street (Spasso's Restaurant) for this year's NYE ball drop.  The tent's up and so is the lighted display above Spasso's that officially starts 2013.

This year's activities and entertainment begins at the front steps at 11pm New Year's Eve.  Philly Gumbo will be back playing with Media's own Matt Heavens Emcee'ing the event.  Have a great time!

Solar Power at Work in Media, PA.......Or is it?

....or is it?!?!?
Media, Pa is not just the County Seat, but a leader in the state when it comes to solar power initiatives.  Thanks to former Council President, Pete Alyanakian, Media was able to secure government grants in the hundred of thousands of dollars that allowed Media to become a showcase for clean, reusable energy.  In fact, some would say Media may even be a supplier of electricity, as our solar power is setup to supply electricity back to the regional grid.

Could anything be better than supplying Media Buildings with clean energy, while also providing energy for others?  How about the electricity from the roof top solar panels on the firehouse used to supply our very own car changing station?  Well, yes, it could be better and that includes the operation and management of these systems.

Believe it or not, the current Borough Council must not have any idea of what buildings are operating correctly or even if the solar power is online.  To my surprise, last week I was told that one building went offline and no one knew about it.  I'm not talking about a weekend thunderstorm resetting a breaker, but a whole system being offline for weeks, months or who knows how long.  This is the second building I know of that suffered a lengthy outage because no one is actively monitoring these solar systems.

One of many solar energy monitoring systems that Media could use
Also would help to ensure Media solar energy is working efficiently.

It's not good for anyone when we can't even take the time to manage these resources to make sure they are operational?  When this first happened, I had asked that a monthly or quarterly assessment be done of each solar facility that has benefited from these grants.  Two reasons: First it's important to know these panels are operational. Second, it would also be beneficial to share the statistics of how well these systems are performing.  Some information could include: How much electricity did we put back on the grid?  What building created the most power?  How much did solar power contribute to energy cost savings?  What dollar amount has Media saved since installation?  There's a tremendous amount of information we could capture that I think would also inspire people as well.

It's not enough to have people drive by and see solar panels on roof tops.  A lot of people may not even know they are there.  What would really be impactful would be to see real time reports, or even manually prepared ones on the borough website so people can really see a value and environmental impact.

It's unacceptable to hear that these solar panels we have installed aren't being  monitored properly.  With today's technology, I can turn my lights and HVAC systems on from my phone half way around the world.  There's no reason why the borough can't do a better job of monitoring their own.

When One Bank in Media Closes, Another Opens

Alliance Bank interested in this property
Back in November Media learned of the sudden closure of Nova Bank by the FDIC.  What was left was the vacant building located on Providence and Baltimore Avenue.  Being it specifically built as a bank, it would have made sense that a financial institution would be interested in the property.

It appears that may come true.  Alliance Bank is currently interested in the property and looking to bring a branch to Media, PA.  The terms of the deal are still being worked out, but from what I learned, it's an expensive undertaking to have a bank at that location.

Media in Two Minutes 12-23-12

For this week's 2012 Christmas addition, I want to thank the readers who visit this blog.  I know there are quite a few, but to be at an event in Concord last night and have someone from Middletown come up to me and tell me they are a regular reader of this blog, really puts it in perspective

I would also like THANK Media's Police and Fire departments, along with the borough's Highway Dept.  There are many volunteers affiliated with this borough who have given countless hours to make our town better.  Thank you all!

Special thanks and appreciation to Council members, Monika Rehoric and Dawn Roe for their independent thinking that has been a fine representation of this borough.  Also, Borough Manager, Jeff Smith.  With out their dedication and leadership, this town would not be half of what it is.  Merry Christmas.

Ok, Let's Go!
Stop sign to be put at 2nd and Monroe Streets
I wrote about this back in February 2012 that there was a need for a stop sign at location of 4th and Orange.  However, last Thursday it was decided one will be put at 2nd and Monroe. That's a good move too.  It's deceptive not to have one here, as the other intersections leading up to this location has them.  What that means: when people come to 2nd and Monroe there isn't a stop sign, but people may naturally think there is and stop.  Or people on Second Street, who have a stop sign before crossing Monroe Street, may think they perpendicular traffic also has a stop sign, which they don't.

Poll taken back in Feb. 2012
It's an honest enough mistake, but having a stop sign here favors safety over convenience.  It's a good move, which should be implemented in the next few weeks.  Interesting, based on the poll it was 50/50 for this stop sign.

Santa's Yearly arrival should be back on State Street next year.
The change in Santa's arrival this November at the steps of the courthouse was done to accommodate the crowds.   It didn't turn out too well as the crowds and businesses on state street both suffered.

At this week's council meeting, a merchant expressed her displeasure with the decision to move the event and sited their sales were down 30% because of it.  She's not the only one.  Having spoken to others, they thought this year's setup was lacking.  Bring Santa back to State Street for 2013

2013 NYE BALL DROP IN MEDIA.........IT'S ON!
Make no mistake, this event is on and will happen where it always has on the corner of 1 West State and Jackson Streets.  Much like the Media 5 miler, NYE in this town has gotten to be a HUGE event.  A lot of house parties take place that evening with big crowds migrating down to see the ball drop.

It's gotten rowdier too!  So take my advice, it you don't want to get sprayed with champagne, stay on the outer fringes of the crowd.  This event has been known to draw 5,000 people, which seems to be growing.

My Three Sons Hot Dogs and Beer Emporium.
Yesterday's grand opening of MTS was a stellar hit.  I didn't get down there until late afternoon, but I shouldn't have waited.  By the time I arrived they were sold out of quite a few of their offerings.  I'm glad they did so well and heard there was a line out the door for part of the day.

Even though there was a line, it was easy in and easy out.  I like the wide open space, the seating and the quick convenience of an eatery like this.  We've all had a lot of hot dogs in our day, but this food was excellent and reasonable! I appreciate the large selections of craft beers, but opted for a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon.   There's something here for everyone and well worth the wait.  Welcome to Media, MTS!

Top Story of 2012 - Media's Third Street Bridge.

Media Borough Council has again made a very foolish gamble with financing for this project.  Not in the best interests of a better economic outcome, but to deliver campaign kickbacks to their cronies who would rather sabotoge the whole effort, than allow the project to proceed to fix one of Pennsyvania's most dangerous dams.

Two days ago, it was found that borough council never notified PennDot of the pending "contempt of court" petition filed against them.  When I discussed the matter with PennDot and asked how this would now affect the financing totaling millions of dollars, PennDot would not give a statement at that time.  Furthermore, after a Judge advised a few weeks ago to work these issues out, this council has had NO meaningful discussions on the matter with the other stakeholders.  Again, ZERO LEADERSHIP! What's worse is that this council has been assuring us the PennDot financing is secure, and yet never told them of the recent court issues.

Mayor Bob McMahon should be embarrassed.

Earlier this Fall the mayor made it abundantly clear to me that he supports a two-way roadway over the proposed dam.  He even made a concerted effort to make sure I knew that! However, when heated debate took place on the subject at the September council meeting, he failed to speak up about Media's biggest issue. Not one word.

Last Thursday at Media's council meeting, former councilman Jim Cunningham asked why he hadn't given a position on Third Street.  The response he told people prior was that he wasn't asked too. Wasn't asked to?  This is the exact game McMahon as a political opportunist has been playing for 18 years.  He'll tell one group one thing, while telling another group something else hoping he won't be exposed by discussion among the two.  He's seen the whole debacle over this bridge, and not to speak until he's decided the political value, is a disgrace.  That strategy probably worked well for him up until now.

Shockingly, at the meeting the Mayor now stated he's for a one-way design.  This after the group he's met with (FROGS) has a representative sitting in the audience.  And with McMahon most likely running for mayor again next year, he's obviously chose political posturing over his responsibilities for this town.

BREAKING: PennDot never made aware of latest “contempt of court” petition filed against borough over Third Street Bridge.

PennDot not made aware of latest legal issues on Third St.

While Media Borough Council has been assuring residents that the financing for the Third Street Bridge was safe, they apparently forgot to inform PennDot regarding the latest “contempt of court” petition filed against them by one of the stakeholders.  I just now got off the phone with a representative from PennDot who is handling this matter for Media, who stated they were not made aware by Media Borough Council that this issue has been brought back into the courts based on the "Contempt of Court" petition.

I asked PennDot how this could potentially affect the funding for this project, however, Penndot was not able to give a statement at this  time.

Media Borough Council Mishandles "Super Wawa" opportunity

For those who wanted a super Wawa and for those who didn't, you all are owed a better explanation by Media Borough Council.  It wasn't a perceived traffic problem that sunk this project, nor cost or parking; it was the ineptness of our own borough council who apparently after a year, could not understand or define what was needed to at least further explore this project.

As you'll see from last night's borough council meeting,  there was confusion, lack of direction, undefined objectives that all led to a miscommunication that was eventually too much for Wawa.  How could a company like Wawa looking to invest millions in this community, have been so badly mishandled?  Whether it would have been built or not, this isn't how community business should be conducted.

Having seen the undermining tactics used against the Third Street Bridge and the antics played out by this borough council, it's no wonder Wawa walked away.  Political agendas and ineptness win out every time here in everybody's home town.

A Sqweeky Clean innovation comes to Media, PA

There’s a new innovative business kicking off that was developed here in Media and will soon be cleaning the world one vehicle at a time.  It’s Sqweeky Mobile Car Spa and they are bringing high tech and convenience that will surely revolutionize what you formally knew as the “wait in line” car wash.   They actually to do very high end car detailing and bring the whole experience to your office or home.

I met Media resident, Dan Lievens at an event this week and he gave me the whole description of the company he and his partner developed.  These guys are quite savvy and if you take a look at sqweeky.com, you’ll see they know a lot of about marketing and technology.  Dan having 15 years experience in IT, really knows how technologies can be leveraged and implemented for this business. They have big plans for Sqweeky and really take advantage geo-location services, real-time updates and video.  In fact, an owner of their soon to be franchises will be able to manage a truck and staff from a laptop computer.  That’s cool!

With fully customized trucks that include their own water and electrical systems, there is no need for customer provided utilities.  Make an appointement on there intuitive website, and they’ll come to you.   Eco friendly and bio-degradable products are important too.  They have  water reclamation mat process that also removes every drop of water from the site of the cleaning.

Just as important as the technology, is the education, certification and training this company has spent on their employees towards the science of car detailing and finishing.  They are a fully insured “go to” team for many needs including:  paint correction, interior/exterior sealants, fabrics/carpets, steam cleaning, engine compartments, headlight restoration, carpet dye, upholstery protection, plastic trim and odor elimination.

Vehicles, Motorcycles, Planes and Fleet Services can all be Sqweeky clean.  Check them out!

Look who just strolled into town, Texas Timmy

He came out of no where but is sure to make an impression on what is shaping up to be a new Media rivalry between old vs. new, or hotdog vs hotdog, and/or beer vs beer.  He's Texas Timmy and he's bringing a bunch of his dogs too.

Pinocchio's new Hotdog - Texas Timmy
After news of My Three Sons Hotdog shop and Beer Emporium hit the streets, and to open this weekend, it now looks like Pinocchio’s is making a pre-emptive strike to get in the hot dog business as well.  They already have a excellent beer store, so why wouldn’t they offer a gourmet hot dog menu (btw, I had always thought Pinocchio’s had a great opportunity to make soft pretzels in their ovens to go with their beer selection – perhaps another story)

After decades of making pizzas, hoagies and cheesteaks, it’s no coincidence Pinocchio’s is now deciding to make premium hotdogs.  And they want you to know about it.  With a recent post on their Facebook page, this could get deliciously exciting.  Two are better than one, and a little fun competition hopefully will bring a lot of customers to both stores.

GRAND OPENING - SATURDAY 12/22
I don’t normally drink beer, but when I do I try not to reference popular tv commercials.    But if you are a connoisseur of beer and hot dogs, let us know what you think about these places.

Media's Food Bank Needs OUR HELP!

Bread donated by local stores
When people drive or walk down State Street many can’t help but get caught up in the glitz and holiday spirit that makes this town so great.  However, there are others that come to town and see the same thing but may not feel it.  In fact, they are not here for the fancy holiday parties and celebrations, but to travel down to the west end of State Street to do something much more important.

Last Thursday, I was able to see firsthand what these people were in need of: Food and Clothing.  I was taken back by how many were waiting for help from Media’s Food Bank operated by the United Methodist Church.  The entrance is located on Baker Street and at 6:30pm there was a noticeable line circling the parking lot with people there to pickup food.  A LINE OF PEOPLE WAITING FOR FOOD IN MEDIA, PA!
Fruit donated by local stores

If you have read this blog you know there are a lot of challenges facing Media, but seeing people in our own town waiting for food really provided perspective, especially for me.

I went in to meet Paul the organizer who was quite busy with the night’s food distribution, but was grateful for any awareness that could be brought to the cause.  He proceeded to show me around and I was quite impressed with the operation and number of volunteers.  There was a room for packaged food distribution where people came in to get dry and canned goods.  Also, a hallway with fresh fruits, vegetables and loaves of bread all of which were donated by local businesses.

Be sure to drop off any unused clothing.
In another room they had hangers full of coats, jackets, sweaters, pants and shoes, which connected to yet another room with more clothing.  Paul told me that the clothes can be as popular as the food.  Paul then asked me if I wanted to step outside to talk to the people in line.  I hesitated, then declined.  I was too embarrassed to have not known about this going on in Media to this degree, nor felt it was appropriate to discuss what may be a very humiliating experience for people.

I’ll be covering this issue more in the coming months and appreciate the anonymous donation I was able to collect for them.

Here’s what you can do:

The food bank is open the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the Month.  They also are open from 10 to 11am on Saturdays.  You can volunteer or donate, I’m sure both will be greatly appreciated.

Food BankThe food bank is currently serving 55-65 families per week. The food bank is open 10:30am – 11:45am on Thursdays and 6:00pm - 7:00pm the first and third Thursday evenings of the month.  Information Line...484-442-0033
First Closet
This clothing distribution center is open from 10:00 until noon each Saturday and some Thursdays (see Food Bank schedule above.) Clothing is available for men, women and children. Donations of gently used clothing (no shoes, handbags or household items please) are accepted whenever the church is open. Volunteers are welcome. For more information please call the church office or email closet staff at closet@mediamethodist.org.

Seven Years and No Media Hotel, Springfield will have theirs in Seven Months

7 years, still no hotel
It was first mentioned in July 2012 that demolition would start soon, thus allowing for the preparation of Media’s Hampton Inn hotel.  That came and went and the start date was moved out to  December 2012.  That too looks like another missed date, as we are two weeks away from the new year.  I have heard the owner submitted for demolition permits, but nothing more than that.

Just down the road in neighboring Springfield things are a lot different with their hotel project.  When they got serious about bringing a hotel to the Springfield Country Club site, things moved fast, real fast.  In the matter of  approximately six months, this went from municipal approval, to concept ideas, to now having heavy machinery on the ground.  I stopped by yesterday to take a look and found things are progressing very quickly.  With the ground cleared and foundations close to being built, there’s every indication this hotel will be open in the Summer of 2013 as displayed by the banners hanging from the construction fences.
7 months until Springfield's hotel opening.

Financing, regulations and market conditions are all factors unique to each real estate development project.  Hotels are not any different, but what I see with Springfield that doesn’t appear in Media, is enthusiasm for the hotel.   Not so much from residents, but from the owner/builder.  The site still looks exactly like it did seven years ago!

A lot can change in those years and perhaps the economical climate and business model of a hotel in Media has too.  Competition certainly is different and if Springfield is online by this summer, things may get interesting for Media.  Every week that Media doesn’t have a hotel, is one week closer to the eventuality that Franklin Mint site will have one.  To the north, things are also progressing with Newtown Square’s  town center, which is also expected to have a hotel of some sort.

construction beginning at Springfield
Where are the economic and business development discussions needed for this town?  Aside from the Media Business Authority, who is taking a proactive lead on reviewing potential opportunities that may benefit Media?  Has the group owning  the hotel site even been contacted to find out what might be the status or expectations for 2013?  How about the Super Wawa fiasco?  People may have not agreed with the traffic or site aesthetics that I believe in good faith Wawa was willing to address, but do you think a Walgreens, which is a strong possibility will be better?

A very interesting woman once told me, “There’s no education in the second kick of a mule.”  Seems we here in Media, PA we might want to think about that one.

Media in Two Minutes - Sunday, December 16, 2012

A few things going on this week with the biggest being Wawa withdrawing their proposal to build a super wawa at the intersection of Providence Rd. and Baltimore Ave.  Will go through some of the highlights this week, but thanks for reading.

Paving in Media:
The repaving of certain borough streets seems to always to get people's attention.  This one in particular regarded Baker Street between Olive and Jackson.  The street was no sooner torn up when people began asking when it would be completed.  It was affecting their customers who parked at the Olive St. garage.  Luckily, the repaving was completed the next day!  Remember, parking is free in this garage for the month of December.

I was a little surprised is was done that quick, but it again shows the importance of the Olive St. garage and the people and businesses who rely on it for parking,

Grand Opening Take Two - My Three Sons Hot Dogs and Beer Emporium
Opening Dec. 22nd
Word traveled quite quickly that My Three Sons Hot Dogs and Beer Emporium didn't have there scheduled grand opening slated for yesterday.  They are still apparently putting together the final touches inside the building.  Looks like they'll be ready to go on the Dec. 22nd.

Media's Newest Eatery - Double Decker Pizza
This really isn't new, but an update.  A few month back Double Decker Pizza announced they'd be coming to Media.  From what I'm hearing, they are putting together an interesting restaurant at the 400 block of Baltimore Ave.  It'll be two floors of space with an expected opening in February.
Opening in Feb 2013

This will be located at the place where the former "Cash for Gold" store was, which they vacated and moved next to the Starbucks down the street.

Media's Biggest Story of 2012?
Based on the informal poll located in the upper right hand corner, it looks like Third Street Bridge may be Media's biggest story of the year.  Closure of Nativity coming in a close second with Super Wawa trailing further behind.

What I'm finding interesting that Media Borough Council mismanaged two of these issues and didn't even have the leadership to formally speak up about the third.

Last week's Reported Car Break In on North Olive Street
I've not heard anything else about this matter since it was first reported on Saturday December 8th.  As typical with these types of incidents, there isn't a formal statement given regarding the status, other than maybe on ongoing investigation.  If you heard otherwise please leave a comment.  Thanks to those who proactively look after the town and report these matters.

Also thanks to the Media Police force who does an excellent job!

Media's Food Bank NEEDS HELP!
We have all heard of food banks and what there purposes are, but when you see one in Media just off of State Street with people standing in line for food, it hits home.  I was there last Thursday to see first hand myself.  I'll share my eperience of what I found there next week.

In the meantime, consider making a contirbution or helping out with their volunteers.  They also need clothing as well.

First United Methodist Church in Media has a food bank:
The food bank is currently serving 55-65 families per week. The food bank is open 10:30am – 11:45am on Thursdays and 6:00pm - 7:00pm the first and third Thursday evenings of the month.  Information Line...484-442-0033

Super Wawa vs.  Council Ineptness
Mismanagement taking toll on Media
Reported by Media Patch, for Brian Hall to say he was "surprised" that Wawa withdrew their proposal for a Super Wawa just goes to show how out of touch and mismanaged this borough council is.  Here again we have a leaderless Borough Council sitting around and waiting for something or someone to make a move.  Aren't they the ones supposed to be working to resolve borough issues, finding solutions, actually working?  Maybe if they actually had the experience or ability to NEGOTIATE on behalf of the borough, we'd get somewhere and not further embarrass the community with lack of effortRegardless of what Wawa was proposing and whether or not you agreed, the way this council treated this project is disturbing.

However, when select people on council or the mayor want something, they won't hesitate to angrily, behind the scenes call a school board who doesn't support their greenway, sign a petition and campaign for a special interest group, shamelessly stack a committee or even secretly provide and PAY for a website for a group they support.   And if it's $20,000 they need for a pet project that includes a 5 minute infomercial, that'll be quietly done in a couple weeks.  So don't tell us you're "surprised" and try to mislead us to think this council was helpless while waiting for everything to go before before the "Planning Commission."

How can this council be surprised that the company withdrew when they've undermined Wawa and MRE the whole time?  And shamelessly NOT be 'surprised' by their own conduct on other projects regarding conflict of interests, favoritism, preferred treatment, secret websites and lobbying a school board behind the scenes?

Democrats, Republicans and Independents have to work together to fix this dysfunction.

No Hot Dogs Today, but New Pizza Place in February

Grand Opening coming, but not today
People have been eagerly waiting in anticipation of Media's newest eatery to open on State Street.  My Three Sons Hot Dogs and Beer Emporium had announced their grand opening today, but it was not to be.  Someone had notified me that they swung by to check it out and found the doors locked.

I walked down to take a look for myself and saw that they still have some building materials about, but looks like they'll open any day now.

To open in February
Since were on the subject, it looks like Media's newest pizza place, Double Decker Pizza located on the 400 block of Baltimore Ave., is set to open some time in February 2013.  They'll have two floors for the restaurant with what looks like a good amount of parking too.  You can check them out on Facebook.

BREAKING: Super Wawa WILL NOT becoming to Media

Wawa abandons Super Wawa in Media

This afternoon, Wawa Corporation formally withdrew their application to bring a Super Wawa to the corner of Providence Rd and Baltimore Avenue.  Much like the situation with the Third Street Bridge, Borough Council again failed to provide the necessary leadership towards one of the biggest projects of the year.  They didn't even communicate!  In this instance, it wasn’t public opinion that sunk the deal, but a borough council incapable of working through issues which they were elected to lead on. After over a year of run-arounds, Wawa has had enough.

$5 million in building construction, $1 million in contracting, 35 jobs and a consistent tax revenue vital to this town has been embarrassingly left to walk away.  Yes, there were challenges to be worked out which regarded traffic and zoning, but it was a business to at least explore further.  Wawa, if anything was owed that.
This is as far as Wawa got with a Super Store.  A concept

Wawa will go on to build other stores, while we wait around to see what might develop next for the gateway to Media.  The bigger problem for the town will be dealing with a borough council that’s completely broken and uncooperative to businesses looking to be a part of the community.

Media's TOP STORIES of 2012

#delconews #mediapa
From what I’m learning 2013 is already shaping up to be an interesting year for Media, Pa, but then again, what year hasn’t?  In 2012 we certainly had some surprises both good and bad, but let’s see what readers have to say.  Below are the stories that got the most views and comments and no doubt were on many peoples minds.  Some of these stories will carry over in 2013 and beyond, while others were here to make their mark in 2012.

Top Stories:

Closing of Natvity BVM – January:
This story started the year off with quite a bang.  Initially spared by the Diocese’s blue ribbon commission, Nativity went on to lose a contested appeal to St. John’s of Wallingford.  The decision ultimately decided the fate of Media’s oldest school, which had been part of the community for 100 years.

Temporary Closure of Media Elementary – March:
Timinig is everything and as one door closes another opens, or vice versa as in the case of Media Elementary.  In March 2012 families received an unexpected call from the faculty that the school would need to be closed for immediate repairs.  It caught a lot of people of guard with the biggest question being where would the students relocate to.  Many options including Barrall Field, adjacent schools or even the old Roosevelt Elementary made up the short list.  However, with the news of Nativity’s closure just weeks before, the decision was made to temporarily locate to Nativity's buildling.  As big as this story was, it essentially became a “non” story with much of that having to do with the good planning, management and implementation of by RTM School Board.

New Restaurants – Spasso, Diego’s, La Porta, Dessert Rose – April/May
After being vacated for years and under Media Borough Management, Spasso came to Media, bought 1 West State Street and became a cornerstone of the town's dining experience.  In addition, Tequila and Mexican Food also made a big impact with the opening of Diego’s.  And of course following up, was Media’s first Mediterranean cuisine brought to us by Desert Rose.

However, one of the biggest surprises of all was the close of the world famous Locust Crest Tavern, which gave way to La Porta in Edgmont.  The rest is history, but the future looks great for what is turning out to be a very popular La Porta restaurant.

Third Street Bridge – April:
Despite the repeated mismanagement by Media Borough Council, favoritism, wasted time and money; there’s only one statement that can be said:  Come 2013 we will be no closer to having the bridge completed then we were 17 years ago!  Back then this was a $1.5 million project, 2012 is was around $3.4.  2013 is anyone’s guess as to how much taxpayer money will be wasted and safety jeopardized in re mediating one of Pennsylvania's most dangerous dams.

In 2011, bi-partisan cooperation resolved the legal conflict and found funding to fully PAY FOR the repair work, yet it’s almost 2013 and not one brick has been laid.

Media’s Hampton Inn – May:
Not so much a story, but lack of one.  6 years since a decision was made to put a Hampton Inn in Media, and no sign of progress, at least not in Media.  Springfield on the other hand has already broken ground on what is proving to be an interesting hotel of their own.  We will see what happens in 2013.

Super Wawa - June:
Near the middle of 2012 we learned of a proposal to bring a Super Wawa to the vacant lot at Providence and Baltimore Ave.  Come 2013, we will STILL be learning of the proposal to bring this store to town.  Despite what may be considered as favorable opinion for this project; there’s no telling how long this will take and even if it’ll be approved.

$20,000 Five minute video – June:
Council President, Brian Hall and Mayor, Bob McMahon weren’t paying attention to what was found to be a very controversial decision to pay $20,000 to a well known, notorious  telemarketer.  Not only was this company investigated and fined for improper conducted by Florida authorities, it was allowed to proceed after the fact by Borough Council.
The money of which was given for this project never went out to bid, nor were any local companies considered for the work.  After repeated attempts for answers by taxpayers and residents, Mayor McMahon claimed to me he was too busy to address the matter.

The "video" is expected to be shown in 2013 but it's not clear which market it will be broadcasted in.

Media Little League 2012 State Champs – July:
Congrats to Media Little League for a great season.

Media Upper Providence Library Expansion – August:
At a proposed cost of $2.5 million, this expansion could not only change how people use the library, but the landscape too.  With a new buildings in the process of being funded, this could turn out to be a big undertaking in 2013.

Super Storm Sandy – October:
A few hours prior to the arrival of Super Storm Sandy, many people, including me were expecting the worst. When information couldn’t be found through TV and Radio, people quickly turned to social media. In those 72 hours, thousands visited this site.   Luckily we were spared the brunt of it, but unfortunately those to the northeast are still feeling the effects this very day.

It's Media in Two Minutes - 12/9/12

It's this week's Media in Two Minutes, which actually might push 3 minutes today, but bear with meFirst off, you may have noticed what seems like advertising up in the left hand corner of this blog.  Well, it is, but it's done at no cost and for groups I'd like to help out.  With a lot of people who swing by this site, it's the least I can do to give back to those who work hard to make this town what it is.

Secondly, people get fired up when there "comments" aren't posted in a timely manner.  I know that and will try to improve the process. Remember, "comments" with obscenities will not be posted.  Attacks against me? Yeah, that's still okay and I'm sure pleasurable for a few.

Ok, let's go!

WE HAVE A WINNER - Payphones still pay......
Wow, did people come out the the electronic wood work to give perspective on last's week's "where's the payphone" contest.  There were a lot of good entries and more places than I realized that still had payphones.  So the winner who won, won on a technicality as he only got one of the two payphones I had in mine.  His guess of the Media Mini Mall was correct, the second location that no one came up with was B.Gross dry cleaners.  I'm actually fond of this phone as when I pickup my dry cleaning I always ask someone there standing if I can borrow a dime to make a call.  (Yeah, I know the joke's old)

Anyway, Congrats to Tom E. who gets a $25 gift certificate to Fast and Fancy

Parking at the Olive St. garage is on Media for the Month of December!

Media will provide free parking at the Olive Street garage.  Merry Christmas

Media has a EV charging station, it just needs a spark(market)
A lot of people seemed to have like the story this week on Media's EV charging station.  It's a great idea, but no one seems to use it.  Over the winter I'm going to see if I can get a few EV scooters to demo them here in Media.  They aren't easy to come by, but hopefully by spring we can take one for a spin.

If anyone has actually used the charging station, I'd like to hear you experience.  Thanks!

CITIBANK closes branch in Media:

closing March 2013
This was about a $1.5 million property that will now be closed in March.  Customers at that time will asked to go the next nearest branch which is located on 18th and Market in center city.

A few weeks ago Nova bank on the corner of Providence and Balitmore Ave. closed.  Fear not, Media still has what seems like and endless supply of banks in town. Need a recommendation? Bryn Mawr Trust (Former - First Keystone) is a great bank, but they really need to improve their online services.

Notify Delco - Sign-up!
This week Delaware County's alert system was used to find a missing person.  Thankfully, the girl was found, but if you haven't, please consider signing up for DELCO ALERT.  The system was extremely helpful during Superstorm Sandy in October.

Media Borough's $20,000 for 5 minutes of Video...........Where is it?
It seems no one can give me a straight answer on when the infamous "video" will be shown; however,  chances are it'll happen sometime early in the new year.  As for seeing it on TV, best of luck.  I'm not sure it'll even be shown in the Philadelphia market.  I still can't even find anyone who has seen "Today in America," the show it's supposed to be shown on.

As I've pointed out, this whole production, which will end up be nothing more than a Youtube video, could have been done for a lot less by companies who are local to the community, not telemarketers from Florida.   The money saved could have gone to fix real issues in Media.

Third St. Bridge and Super Wawa
?????????????? More information on this next week

Media - Upper Providence Library $2.5 million expansion
With Upper Providence announcing they will not be contributing additional funds for the library expansion, it'll be interesting to see how this difference will be made up.  Interestingly enough, there is a building for sale/lease two blocks away.  I wasn't able to get the price as of this writing, but with some modifications, could this be a cheaper option?

This building is located on the corner of N. Jackson and W. Third St.

Three Son's Hot Dogs opens 12/15/12
Media eagerly anticipates openings of new eateries.  Next of for the town is My Three Sons Hot Dogs and Beer Emporium.  For all the details, check out the owner's post on what to expect.

New Years Eve 2012 BALL DROP is ON and will be at State and Jackson Streets
With the recent changes in venue for Santa's visit a few weeks ago, people had questions regarding the status of Media's New Years Ball Drop.  Well, no worries.  NYE will take place where it always had at State and Jackson Streets.

A woman's body recovered at Ridley Creek State Park

The Daily Times is reporting that a woman's body has been recovered from Ridley Creek State park.  The body was found Saturday afternoon in a heavily wooded area, though the identity has not been released.  The article reports that foul play does not appear to be associated with the death.

Earlier this week a missing person report was issued for Teresa Matracola 44, who often frequented the part.  Investigation is ongoing at this time.
