Fireworks in Media, PA? Not since 1986, but don't forget Family Fun Day!

A  popular search trend this week here in Media, PA includes queries on "Fireworks" and where to watch them.  If you've had this question on your mind, you can swing over to delcotimes.com for a listing of towns that will be featuring fireworks this weekend.

What about fireworks in Media?  Well, we haven't had them here since 1986 when borough council ruled in favor of discontinuing the event that had gone on at Glen Providence Park since the sixties. It was reported that crowd control problems were the main reason for fireworks to be cancelled.  Liability insurance also played a part too.  You can read an archived article at philly.com about reasons behind the decision.

Over the years it seems as though residents have taken matters into their own hands by having pyrotechnic displays in the street.  Truthfully, I don't know if there is a ordinance about home fireworks, but I do know that stores in the area now sell vast arsenals consisting of anything that can be lit by a fuse, exploded or launched across the sky.  So, the home shows have advanced quite significantly since the days of sparklers, smoke bombs and snakes.
Silly Joe

So in lieu of fireworks, Media will be having it's Annual Family Fun day, Monday at Barrall Field at 10am til noon.  Musical entertainment will be provided by Silly Joe.

Wear you bathing suit, the event will also include water slides, sprays and plenty of dousing. Games, contests and crafts too!  Media Recreation board will be hosting the event and will have food and drinks for attendees.

Have a great Independence Day weekend!

What's Best in Media: A Media Local's point of view 2011

Our 2010 pick for best sushi - Margret Quo's
We had a lot of fun with this post last year in which we went through and picked our favorites entities from a Media's local point of view.  In the last year things have changed.  Restaurants have come and gone, but we still have plenty to choose from here in good old Media, PA.

There were quite a few who were outspoken about the selections we recommended, so perhaps we'll do some sort of poll.   In the meantime, let us know where you think the best pizza, wings, beer or general all around good time place you would recommend to locals.....and friends.

This list for 2011 will be posted shortly.........

ACTOR JP DUNPHY HAS A BUSY SUMMER AT MEDIA THEATRE

ACTOR  JP DUNPHY  HAS  A  BUSY SUMMER  AT MEDIA THEATRE

JP Dunphy, who has appeared in The Media Theatre productions of “Annie” and “The Who’s Tommy” this past season, will add his enthusiastic and personable personality to “Delco Idol Junior” this summer. As the emcee of the five-week competition, Dunphy will work with youth ages 7-13 as they sing their hearts out for a packed audience on Delaware County’s only professional music theatre stage. The competition takes place Sunday nights at 7pm July 10-August 7.

Dunphy, who was  a top five Idol contestant four years ago, will also be seen in the role of Benny in Media Theatre’s summer production “Rent, School Edition”.   He is the summer’s guest artist, which is a position in which a professional actor works with the youth enrolled in the camp to educate them as they perform together. In Spring of 2010, he performed in the theatre's mainstage Broadway Series production of "Rent". He said, "I know the show inside and out and look forward to bringing my knowledge of the piece to add to the experience for the youth this summer."

“Rent, School Edition” is the youth version of Jonathon Larson’s popular Broadway musical which focuses on a group of friends struggling to survive in the 1980’s. Songs include “Seasons of Love” and “One Song Glory”. The show has been edited a bit for youth performers, although the subject matter remains the same. The Media Theatre's Artistic Director Jesse Cline directs the production, with Tom Fosnocht, Resident Music Director. The musical is on stage July 15 to August 7 with performances on Fridays at 7pm, Saturday at 2pm and 7pm, and Sundays at 3pm.

Dunphy’s advice for both the Idol contestants and the cast of “Rent, School Edition” is, as he says, to ‘have a good time and be yourself. The truth you bring on the stage will be what the audience remembers.’

For tickets to either “Delco Idol Junior” or “Rent, School Edition” call 610-891-0100 or visit mediatheatre.org

Tedman O'Hara
I want to thank all the readers who come by on a daily basis to read ATM.  With over 500 posts on literally, all things Media, this blog has set a standard that many have have tried to emulate in their own way.  I not only think that's cool, but I encourage it and hope others are inspired to express what's important to them.

Tomorrow evening, I'll be featured with other Delco bloggers discussing why we blog in the community, what we think is important to readers, and how news on this level will play a big part in the future.  With my experience in this medium, I've learned that no story is too big or too small.  Whether it's politics, events, lost pets or power outages, I've seen a fascinating amount of data trending that interestingly shows what people like......and dislike.  Believe me, this couldn't be easier to do, but it does require a lot of commitment, enthusiasm and grit.  By grit I mean, the ability to take criticism because you'll get plenty of that.

One of the topics I want to bring up tomorrow revolves around "Comments."  Doing this for as long as I have, comments are still a tricky item to handle.  I've taken the position:  I'll allow comments by "anonymous," as long as they are within the boundaries.  I use to let them post freely, until some problems occurred with cyberbullying, which led to this blog now having to approve each comment, anonymous or otherwise.  I typically don't reply to anonymous comments, unless it's someone in need.

I'm proud to have been selected by Editor,  Phil Heron of the delcotimes.com as one of their first bloggers. When we first met, we weren't sure where this would all go, but for me, it's exceeded my expectations and that of the readers.

As the technology and medium continue to evolve, so will this blog and the way vistors interact with it.  I'm very excited with some of the things on the horizon that will really give the experience here at ATM a "WOW" factor.

Check us out tomorrow, get inspired and make a impact.  Too many people in this world are waiting for someone....anyone, to make the first move......don't be one of them.

Results Matter: Council President, Pete Alyanakian getting things done in Media!

Facts are facts: after a decade of poor leadership, costly indecisioncronyism and talk from former council leadership; Media is finally getting the results it needs from Media Boro. Council President, Pete Alyanakian (R) and Vice President, Monika Rehoric (D).  In the last year, more has been accomplished with the third street bridge, than the last decade under the former democratic leadership.

As a candiate myself, I look forward to getting results for the residents of Media, not political cronies!

Tonight 7:30pm , June 19th 2011, Lonnie Shields will be playing at
Rose Tree Park's Amphitheater

Lonnie Shields is truly the next generation of the blues. He cut his blues teeth performing with the Jelly Roll Kings. His recording career has led him through a number of studios from Memphis and Clarksdale to tours all over the world.

This Delta born guitarist, singer and songwriter's style is just the opposite of his demeanor. Lonnie comes across as a mild mannered southern gentleman with a laid back nature. On stage, he is transformed into an extraordinary entertainer moving to his music and feeding off the energy of the audience. His music is deeply rooted in gospel, soul and R & B while his sound, like his soul is never too far from the home of the blues.

A great night for festivities in Media for this year's 5 Mile Race

The rain held off and fun was had by all for this year's Media 5 miler.  I didn't get a chance to checkout the whole town, but from the people I spoke today, there were plenty events to attend in addition to the bar and restaurants on State St. Families really liked the Kids Run that was held at Barrall Field.  Well done, Media!

FOX-TV'S SUE SERIO EMCEES DELCO IDOL FOR SECOND SUMMER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: ROGER RICKER/ MEDIA THEATRE/ 610-891-0100

FOX-TV'S  SUE SERIO EMCEES DELCO IDOL FOR SECOND SUMMER

Sue Serio, the good-natured morning anchor on FOX-TV's "Good Day Philadelphia", returns as the emcee of The Media Theatre's "Delco Idol" contest for the second summer. The popular vocal competition takes place Wednesday nights at 7pm July 6 to August 3.

"This is always fun for me," Serio said. "The talent on the stage is remarkable and I am happy to be a part of this exciting event at Delaware County's only professional music theatre."

"Delco Idol" is The Media Theatre's summer showcase for aspiring vocalists ages 14-24. Each week they perform songs of their choosing which highlight their personality. Jesse Cline, the theatre's Artistic Director, is the one constant judge throughout the five weeks. He is joined by a panel of judges which features several community leaders, entertainment specialists, or media personalities.

The vocalists are, for the most part, from Delaware County, although a few reside in Chester and Montgomery Counties as well as Wilmington, DE, and Philadelphia. The criteria states that contestants must live within a 55-mile radius of The Media Theatre. Past winners include Brian Giebler, of Phoenixville, and Lauren Cupples, of Glenolden, who went on to have a career as a professional actress. Cupples appeared recently in The Media Theatre's "Annie" and performed this spring in Florida.

Serio is hoping to get some good conversation and debate going on about "Delco Idol" on facebook and twitter. "Our viewers debate about weather all the time on the internet, so perhaps some chatter will take place about who they think should win."

For tickets to "Delco Idol" at The Media Theatre call 610-891-0100. The contestant list is listed at mediatheatre.org, where you may also place votes for your favorite contestant to assist them in remaining in the contest each week.

Media's 5 Miler Race Tonight!

Good luck to all the 1,400 runners participating in this year's Media 5 Mile Race.  It's an extraordinary evening with the race starting at 7pm ( Kids' Runs at 6:00 at Barrall Field - State and Edgemont) and post neighborhood parties going on for much longer.  If you're traveling into or out of Media shortly before the race, allow for extra time as streets are typically blocked off in preparation for the event.

Last Night's Media Blues Stroll.....A Big Success

A special thanks to everyone who coordinated last night's Blues Stroll. From what I saw and heard, it was a huge success and one of the biggest turn-outs to date.  For the most part, the weather cooperated making it the perfect night for browsing each bar and restaurant to see some of the best acts around.  Everyone will have their favorite, but Lonnie Shields at Sligo really had the place jumping.

Incidents at Media Elementary Playground

It's been brought to my attention that there have been complaints, and emails sent to me, from residents that the behavior experienced after school hours at the Media Elementary playground has been inappropriate for the younger children playing there.

This issues involved foul language/writing, aggressive basketball play, fighting and litter.  I've also personally noticed loitering at this site well after 9pm on weeknights.  I've forwarded these complaints on to Borough Council and Public Safety for discussion.

This week I heard back from Councilman, Jim Cunningham, who is also Chair of Public Safety,  and agreed that the incidents were posing difficulties for the community.  He went on to say that he has discussed the problems with Police Chief, Wusinich.  As a course of action, there will be heightened police patrols and officers will exit their cars to visually inspect the playground area.

If you hear of incidents, please let the Media Police know.

A special thanks to Chief Wusinich, Councilman Cunningham and the concerned residents that brought this up.

Thanks

Council President, Pete Alyanakian brings great ideas to Media with new signage!

A rendering of the new proposal by Council President, Pete Alyanakian and borough council for new signage on Baltimore Pike.  The signage will be traffic facing alerting motorists of the retail district and dining.  A secondary, smaller sign will allow for advertising, paid sponsorship and seasonal event updates.  Advertising pricing has yet to be determined, but will act as a revenue stream for the Media Business Authority.

Example of events and sponsorship advertising
Council's economic development initiative, in cooperation with the Media Business Authority, is just another example of great leadership that continues to show real results.
