Media's 911 Call System - Call even if it's not an emergency

One of the things that came out of last week's borough council meeting was the encouragement of residents to use the 911 call service for all Police related issues.  That includes everything you would normally call the Media Police about.

I've always had the mindset that 911 should only be used for a REAL emergency and not for something such as a dog barking late at night.  Well, this is no longer the case as the police dept. relies on these calls to the 911 center  in order to accurately track problems in the borough.

Gibbons Automotive Hosts Classic Car Show in Media, PA

Gibbons Automotive did a great job hosting this week's "Rock and Roll" classic car event on top of the Baltimore Pike and Olive St. parking garage.  Many were in attendance with the whole parking lot filled with many makes of automobiles.  I'd have to say I was intrigued to see an old Mustang SVO in the bunch.  If you like cars...of any sort, it was a great way to see them up close.

Proceeds of this event went to the Media Fire Company.

Media Pa Super Sunday 9/19/10 9 to 4pm

Preparations underway for today's Media Super Sunday

Media Borough Council Meeting 9/16/10

It's been two months since the change in borough council leadership and people are encouraged.  In fact, things went quite well at last week's meeting.  Of note, 1 West State St.(aka Broduer's) will now be listed with Zommich McMahon.  This will more actively market the building than prior efforts to passively list it.  Tough market aside, this was the right thing to do.  As it sits, is loses $6,000 per month in rent to the borough and has been for the last 10 months.

Brodeur's 2006
It was announced that a family restaurant concept may take the place of the former Benjamin's Market (aka old Bill Battey's).  No liquor license for the proposed business, but the model, as explained Thursday evening, will cater to families (think birthday parties and celebrations) and small community outreach events.  Council was very supportive of the proposal and I think a lot of the town will be too.

1 West Front St.
Not a month goes by without news about the 3rd St. Bridge.  Last week was no different.  Council applied for $75,000 in assistance from the county.  If approved, this will go to cover half of the design fees.  A design needs to be in place in order to solicit additional funding from the state.  Council, led by Pete Alyanankian and Monika Rehoric, also met with State Senator, Dominic Pileggi in order to discuss budgetary plans that may include possible funding for the bridge in the coming year/s.

3rd St. Bridge
Lastly, the big issue coming up and something that needs to be carefully looked at regards the pension plans for the workers of Media.  At no fault of the borough, there is a deficit with the funding of these obligations.  With the lagging economy, there isn't a municipality that I know of that doesn't have a similar problem looming.  I'm not a financial planning expert, but the Mayor did a great job at explaining the situation, what is currently being done and what needs to be looked at going further.

Ariano's Wood Oven Pizza.....one day closer to opening

I was told that a lucky few were invited to Ariano's for a special tasting last week.  If anything, that's a good sign that the grand opening may be soon. Hopefully that's true, as I've been saying this for awhile.

Reports of car break-ins - N. Monroe St. UPDATE

9/18 ******UPDATE******  At last week's 9/16 Borough Council Meeting, the Mayor addressed this issue and will discuss with the Police Chief.  The issue involved a resident who confronted a person who claimed they had mistakenly entered the wrong car.  Be sure to lock your cars!

I've received word from a resident on N. Monroe St. that there have been a rash of car break-ins over the last week or so.  This has yet to be formally confirmed by the Media Police, but in the mean time you may want to be sure your car is locked.

If you have more information about this situation, please share.  You can post anonymously.

Team Childern providing a whole computer setup for $75!

These days, people take computers and high-speed internet for granted.  You may have a computer at home, at work, or in your hand walking down the street with one of the many smartphones out there. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who don't.  Especially kids.

A fellow blogger, Stefan Roots who does a great job reporting on Chester City, is out to change that with the help of a group call Team Children.  Team Children is a non-profit group in the King of Prussia area that supplies slightly used computers at a fraction of the cost of new one.  For the price of $75 you get a computer, programs, mouse, keyboard and monitor.

Second Baptist Church getting a new addition

The Second Baptist Church located on the east side of State St. is getting a new addition.  Based on the architect's rendering below, it looks like a perfect fit.

Linn Architect's do a great job with persevering the character of Media in all the commercial designs they do for the borough

Media, The Place to be After-Work

Media gains recognition from the Philadelphia Inquirer as the place to be after-work.  With nine restaurants opening since 2000, there's no lack of choices.

Bridging(3rd St.) Media, PA with 50 New Luxury Homes

Like it or not, 50 new luxury homes are coming to Kirk Ln, just on the outskirts of the Media Borough. Trees are being cleared for the properties and temporary trailers are now being put in place to manage the project.
Ridley Creek Road
Interesting, is that the initial tree clearing on Kirk Ln. is mere yards from the corner of 3rd St. and the infamous closed bridge. Media businesses would noticeably benefit from 50 families moving into close proximity to the borough, especially if they had easy access (bike, walk) via the Bridge. Quite possibly, they'd be closer to State St. than some Media residents that live in the North end of town.
Kirk Lane, 3rd Street on the right
13 years with out a bridge has been too long, but with recent changes to council, we'll have to see what's in store next for this issue

Does Media have a pigeon problem?

Municipal Garage - Amber St.
Lately, there's been more and more talk about a pigeon problem in Media. It's concentrated mostly towards the West end of town; specifically by the municipal parking garage bordered by Citron and Amber St. I haven't noticed them too much on State St., or in other areas of Media, but there is no doubt a lot of pigeons roosting on and by the parking garage. In fact, at last week's Borough Council Workshop Meeting, this same issue was brought up by a local resident.

I know there are others concerned about this also, as they've also contacted me.
It's unclear how this all came about, and maybe they've been there all along, but it is suspected that someone may be feeding the birds, which in turn adds to the nuisance and displeasure of neighbors who live in that area and have to deal with the cleanup.

Beer! It's popular in Media PA @ Pinocchio's

Media is known for a lot of things, but apparently it's also becoming known for BEER thanks to the great selection provided by Pinocchio's Beer Garden.

I'm not just saying this, but people from Philadelphia are too.

Congratulations to Media's own Plumstead Inn for raising over $11,000 for the Tug McGraw Brain Cancer Foundation.

On August 22nd, 2010, the Plumstead Inn hosted the 5th Annual Beef and Beer to raise money for the cause.  Having had a chance to stop by, it was great to see Media locals and area participants donating their time, effort and generous door prizes to this event.

It hasn't started in earnest, but the end of the Media Inn is not far away. As of now, there are no plans or ideas for what may later fill this space.
