First Keystone Bank to become Bryn Mawr Trust later this year

I've been a member of the First Keystone Bank for over 20 years and that's no small feat with all the different options and cost savings banks have these days.  The reason for my loyalty, is there loyalty and courtesy they've extend to me.  In today's financial world, a "community bank" is a term often exploited to mean really anything.  Not First Keystone.  They truly are a community bank that not only hires and does business with the residents of Media, but generously contributes to its events and causes.

Later in the year First Keystone will become part of Bryn Mawr Trust, having been acquired by the bigger bank last year. I've been assured that the same community and relationship that Media has come to known from First Keystone, will remain with Bryn Mawr Trust.

Media's Philly Care Share, discontinued - I great Idea Gone!

After a a couple inquiries, I looked in to see what had happened to Media's Philly Car Share.  The car they had for Media was located on the corner of Veteran's square and State St.  I'm not sure how long it was in Media, or how long it's been gone.  I can't say I every rented it, nor knew anyone else who did.

What I do remember was a red Toyota Prius parked with its own designated spot and sign.  For those who aren't familiar with the concept, cars could be reserved for rental via a website that handled the rates and scheduling.  Typically, these cars are placed in high density areas and rented for a few hours to a few days.  Judging from the cars driving in the streets of Philadelphia, the idea seemed to be quite popular.

From what I can deduct from the Philly Car Share website, they seemed to have discontinued their service here in the local Media market.  Surprising, as I thought the company would have thrived with such a service here in the Borough.

LETTER TO THE DAILY TIMES EDITOR, RE: MEDIA TROLLEY

Phil Heron, editor of the Daily Times sent this to allthingsmedia.com having received it from a Media resident.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY TIMES:

For the last several months, the Media-Upper Darby trolley has been off State Street in Media, due to major track repair along the line.  What a pleasure.

The biggest problem in Media is not parking, as has long been cited by our public officials.  It is the trolley, hogging the main artery of our traffic-clogged downtown.

Septa buses now service the area beautifully.  And more safely for everyone.  Try negotiating between an unmovable trolley and parallel parked vehicles and a Fed-Ex truck on a regular weekday, and you might decide to head for the mall.

The stores and restaurants are the main attractions in Media.  Like the horse-and-buggy, the trolley had it's day--and may still be a great, clean means of transportation, but just not on State Street in Media.

MEDIA THEATRE HAS A SONG-FILLED SPRING AND SUMMER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: ROGER RICKER/ MEDIA THEATRE/ 610-891-0100
MEDIA THEATRE HAS A SONG-FILLED SPRING AND SUMMER
The hills may be alive with the sound of music, as the song says, and so is the borough of Media as The Media Theatre has a full schedule for the warm months ahead.  The theatre’s Spring and Summer schedule brings a popular contemporary musical, a Disney classic, summer camps, one of the world’s most popular musicals, and the sixth time a “Delco Idol” winner will be announced.
“RENT”, the popular musical which focuses on a group of artists living on Manhattan’s Lower East Side during times of hardship, has its regional professional premiere at The Media Theatre May 5-June 6. The ‘pop-opera’ is based on Puccini’s La Boheme and won 4 Tony awards in 1996 as well as the Pulitzer Prize.  “RENT” became one of Broadway’s longest running hits (12 years) and spawned a new generation of stage and screen stars (Adam Pascal, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel) as well as a younger generation of theatre-goers. The contemporary score includes the hit “Seasons of Love” and the story touches on serious topics which have remained relevant.  Patrick Ludt, seen in Media’s popular “Wizard of Oz” as the Tin Man, portrays the role of Roger, a singer-songwriter hoping for “One Song Glory” in the musical and Andrew Deichman takes on the role of Mark, the videographer documenting the lives of his friends. “RENT” is directed by Artistic Director Jesse Cline.
Disney’s “Beauty and The Beast” comes to life with all of the great songs from the animated classic in an edited “Junior” version for the stage. Performed by a cast of children and teenagers, “Beauty and The Beast” will enchant all ages weekends in June.  Media’s Christopher Infantino becomes Gaston in the production. The cast also includes Katie Stecklair as Belle, Tre Fountain as The Beast, and Brandon DeSanto as Lefou.
Broadway Music Theatre Camp begins five two-week sessions June 21. Each day, campers ages 6 and up have courses in acting, vocal music, and choreography at Delaware County’s only professional music theatre. Campers are split into appropriate age groups until the final 90 minutes of each day when they all work together on stage rehearsing the performance which takes place the final Friday of each session.  Campers create unique three-to-four minute scenes in the acting class with topics relevant to their age. The sessions this year will include music from Rodgers and Hammerstein (June 21-July 2), Andrew Lloyd Webber (July 5-16), Disney (July 19-30), Stephen Schwartz (August 2-13), and Contemporary Music Theatre (August 16-27).
“Les Miserables”, one of the most popular musicals throughout the world, will be performed by The Media Theatre Teen Ensemble July 14-August 8. The score contains the song “I Dreamed A Dream” which had a resurgence in popularity this past fall when artist Susan Boyle sold over 7 million copies of her recorded version. Based on Victor Hugo’s popular literary classic, “Les Miz” (as its fans refer to it) is set in early 19th-century France and follows the intertwining stories of a cast of characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution.
And, entering its sixth summer, a new winner will be announced at the “Delco Idol” competition which begins July 7, continuing for 5 consecutive Wednesday evenings. Contestants range in age from 14-24 and must live within a 55-mile radius of The Media Theatre. The “JR” Idol contest will delight audiences Sunday nights beginning July 11 with competitors even younger (ages 6-13). Jesse Cline, Artistic Director, holds auditions for the “Idol” contests June 7 and 8 to choose the 30 who will make it to the actual vocal competition.
For information on “RENT”, “Beauty and the Beast”, Media Theatre Summer Camps, “Les Miserables” or the “Delco Idol” contests, call 610-891-0100 or visitwww.mediatheatre.org

Media Borough Council: Democracy in Action if you know the right people!

I attended last Thursday night's council meeting to find that legislation was, in affect, rammed through despite recommendations from the councils own health board I fully support and welcome a community farmers market, but this conduct and mishandling of the basic forms of the legislative process has angered many.

How can Borough Council led by President, Peter Williams base a binding, long term decision for a farmers market on nothing more than a Mass Gathering Permit and comments from the floor?  There was no formal documentation,  business plan, contingency, etc.  Mind you, a much lesser request by Iron Hill for a one day beerfest included: placement sketches, impact assessments of the local business, security, MBA polling from Jackson St. to Galey St., and questions regarding  clean up.  The beerfest was even graciously donating proceeds to the Youth Center.  So, why wasnt the Farmer's Market held to the same standard?

Borough Council more or less rubber-stamped the approval for a farmers market after legitimate issues were brought up about health, parking, safety, location clean-up, etc.  The issue wasnt about obstruction; all members of council were in favor, but a request for further information that any group or organization would've been required to produce The Boroughs own Health Department  was denied a two-week extension by Council because Media's elected officials thought the participating groups, who would make up theFarmers Market”,  neededCertainty in order to make timely decisions So, basically, its not whats good for Media residents, its what good for special interest groups!

Perhaps this would have all been handled differently if the Council's Presidents wife, Adeline Ciannella , wasnt Thursday nights prime spokesperson and Farmers Market top advocate.  Council took Adeline's word, that she had met and talked to the local businesses regarding the market.  Apparently this wasnt discussed with Best Produce and Selenes Co-op, two businesses that have the most to gain/lose.  Both told me, that neither heard from anyone regarding participation in a Farmers market, let alone being invited.  One of which is threatening a letter to the Daily Times editor over the conduct.

This is not only a double standard, but favoritism towards special interests.

This weekend it was brought to my attention that a string of cars were burglarized last week at the Ridley Creek State Park.  The area in particular was the entrance by Barren Road and Sycamore Mills.  Disturbing, was that the entry into the vehicles was forced, thus causing damage to door locks.  The time of these thefts occurred during the late afternoon/evening hours during last week.

Media Borough Council, I have a question about the budget increase

Media Community:

Linked is the agenda for tonight’s Media Borough Council Meeting.  If you’re unable to make it, you can watch it on both Comcast (channel 10) and Verizon (channel 42 ).

In addition, they will accept emailed questions sent to questions@mediaborough.com, which will be answered at the end of the meeting.

As a concerned member of the community and an email I will be submitting;  I’m interested to know the following:

How has the Police Protection Budget for 2010 have a 2% increase from 2009, when two full-time dispatchers were outsourced in 2009 to the county for 911 services?

Police Protection is now 44% of the WHOLE Operating Budget with 16 full-time officers.

“Poem in Your Pocket” Week Returns to Media April 25 – May 1

“Poem in Your Pocket”
Week Returns to Media April 25 – May 1

Contact:  Winnie Host, Librarian 610-627-6272 whost@rtmsd.org

If you plan to be in Media during the week of April 25 – May 1, don’t leave home without first putting a poem in your pocket.  Why?  So you can share it with your favorite store owner, police officer or neighbor and earn a treat

For the second year of what they hope will become a long-standing tradition, the Rose Tree Media School District, the Media Upper Providence Library, the Middletown Library and other neighborhood groups will sponsor “Poem in Your Pocket,” a week-long celebration of literacy, poetry and community.  During “Poem in Your Pocket” week, Media-area residents are encouraged to share poems with one another – at home, at school and, more importantly, in public places, such as downtown State Street and more than 20 local stores and restaurants.  Participating Media businesses will be offering special deals and discounts to anyone who comes in and recites a poem.

“Poem in Your Pocket” is just one of the activities available during April as part of National Poetry Month.  This wacky poetry fest has met with great success in other parts of the country, and local librarians thought promoting it here might help to strengthen the ties that exist between the schools, libraries and local businesses.

We know that promoting literacy is a goal that the entire community shares, and we thought this program would be a great way to accomplish that goal and also teach people that poetry can be fun,” said Winnie Host, librarian at Penncrest High School.  “We are grateful to the local businesses that are participating, and really amazed at their overwhelming interest in this program.  We encourage people to take a trip into Media with a poem and take advantage of the special deals that are being offered. ”

Carol Sciarra of Selene’s Whole Food Coop is one of the enthusiastic “Poem in Your Pocket” participating merchants.  “We had a very positive experience last year.  The kids and the poetry are wonderful and we appreciate efforts that will encourage people to visit downtown Media and shop in our store. One girl read a poem we liked so much we all wanted a copy.  We’re looking forward to hearing some great poems again this year.”

Years later, actor/producer/director Henry Winkler began a series of children’s novels entitled Hank Zipzer: The World’s Most Amazing Under-Achiever. The books were inspired by Winkler’s own struggles with dyslexia. Winkler will share his inspiring story about overcoming adversity in this free lecture at Benchmark – a school dedicated to educating bright, struggling readers in grades 1–8 since 1970.
WHEN:              Thursday evening, April 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Benchmark, located on a wooded campus along Providence Road in Media, PA, is an independent, not-for-profit school. Winkler is the first of three free community lectures celebrating Benchmark’s past and introduces the school and its mission to a new generation of families in the tri-state region. Students travel daily from NJ, DE & Philadelphia’s surrounding counties to attend its elementary and middle school.
HENRY:               Winkler is known internationally as a successful TV, stage and movie actor, winning two Golden Globes and three Emmy nominations. He also has been honored with a “star” on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After three decades in Hollywood, he teamed up with co-author Lin Oliver to write the critically acclaimed children’s series, Hank Zipzer, which follows the everyday adventures of a bright boy with learning challenges.
