MEDIA'S ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

MEDIA'S ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT
Presentation by Justin Wright, March 18th, 7 pm,
Media Borough Community Center, 301 N. Jackson St., Media, PA

Justin Wright, a senior at Yale University and a Westtown School graduate, formerly from West Chester, is doing his senior research project on the measurement of Media’s Ecological Footprint. The value of doing an ecological footprint now is to provide a baseline against which future progress can be measured. It will also show the specific areas in which improvements can make the greatest difference. Mr. Wright is working with Media’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) and Transition Town Media (TTM) to conduct his research. He will present his final results on Thursday, March 18, 2010, 7:00 p.m., at the Media Borough Community Center. The public is encouraged to attend this important event.

Media Council talks about Brodeur's site - The Delaware County Daily Times : Serving Delaware County, PA(DelcoTimes.com)

A couple things: 1) area real estate appraisers are in general agreement that building appraisal comes in at approximately ~$900k and probably needs $40k in repairs and upgrades. 2) Three council members cannot take a position on what to do with this building after having months of assessing this situation, as well as, the past history? What additional input or discussion needs to be had? SELL THE BUILDING! This is a complete lack of leadership/direction on a fiduciary matter that affects many tax payers. They didn't even articulate reasons for or against sale or lease. Not to mention that Council President, Williamson indicated that it may not be decided for MONTHS! At $6k per month in lost rent, this isn't merely nickels being tossed around; especially, when the Library only receives $90k a year from the 2010 budget. 3) The Borough residents are OUT $30k in rent that will probably never be collected. Businesses and restaurants I've talked to feel that Borough Council gives an unfair advantage to businesses occupying borough property, hence, what they considered a $30k, unsecured, interest free, borough. loan to the last occupant.

Borough Council, don't placate the issue. Step up, make a decision and let's move forward.

No Decision Made on Old Borough Hall

There's been no decision made on the future sale/lease of Old Borough Hall.  There were many in attendance tonight with equal discussion on reasons for sale, as well, as lease.  I stated that the building should be sold, as the borough should not be in real estate business.  This supported by the fact of the two unsuccessful attempts to rent this building in the last five years.

Council stated that the building has been appraised but would not release the figure.  They did state 18 inquiries were made regarding the status of the premises.  Based on similar assessments and informal input from commercial real estate appraisers, the price falls within the $800 - $900k range.  Historically, yearly rent from this property is approximately $70k at ~4,800sqf.

I requested a time frame from Borough Council on when a decision will be made regarding sale/lease, and was told it could take many months.  I question Borough Council's direction on this matter, as a sub committee was assigned months ago to asses this issue, but nothing regarding a position or direction was announced tonight.  I suspect it'll probably be placated, at the expense of taxpayers,  for a long time to come.

Per Media Borough: Options for future Use of Old Borough Hall

Per Media Borough: www.mediaborough.com

The Borough of Media is the owner of One West State Street, the former post office building that most recently was the location of Brodeur's Restaurant. Brodeur's closed in early December.

Borough Council and staff are engaged in developing a series of options for future use of the building. These options may include leasing the building to a new tenant, selling the building, or a new public use for the property.
There will be opportunity for public input prior to Borough Council taking any definitive action. Please look for an announcement of a date and time in January for a public meeting.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or ideas for use of the building, please contact Jeff Smith, Borough Manager at 610-566-5210 ext 242.

Media running out of space to put snow after plowing - The Delaware County Daily Times : Serving Delaware County, PA(DelcoTimes.com)

Outside contractors were hired with removing snow during the 1996 storm, not sure why additional help wasn't brought in this time.  The Mayor goes on to state the cars weren't off the streets after a snow emergency was issued...then why wasn't this addressed/enforced by the borough?  As for places to put the snow, how about Barrel field?  And if outside contractors were pushing the snow into streets, why was this allowed to happen?

Complaints about Media Borough Snow Removal

I heard a lot of complaints (FB, Twitter, walking State St.) this week about Media's lack of snow removal.  Talking to a few people, it appears that five boro. employees were tasked with removing all the snow in town.  Additionally, from what I've heard, no outside help was brought in.  Make your own judgements.  If you have something to add, please do.

Historically, the yearly budgeted amount for snow/ice removal for the Borough is: $22,000

Kudos to the Media Hwy Dept. for a commendable job removing the snow!

A big "Thanks" to Ralph and the Media Hwy. Dept. for doing a great job removing the snow from the streets.  Three major storms in a month is quite a daunting task.  They've been working for three days straight!

The Big Media, PA Dig Out!

The big "Dig Out" continues here in Media, PA.  Many or the roads are now passable with just a few still closed due to downed trees (Kirk Lane, Sycamore Mills Rd.).  Thanks to the local businesses (Court Diner, Trolley Stop and 7 Stones, Plumstead, Sligos...to name a few...) for being open and alleviating the symptoms of cabin fever.

Hampton Inn to be discussed in Media

Planning Commission Meeting Feb 2, 7:30 at borough hall

MEDIA — The Hampton Inn project is on tonight’s agenda of the borough’s planning commission. After a long hiatus during which the project was in litigation, the plan will be viewed with the clock starting in the land development phase.

The four-story Hampton Inn and Suites at Beatty and Providence roads received several approvals from the Zoning Hearing Board, including adding a fourth floor where three were permitted with consideration that the building met height restrictions.

Several neighbors on adjacent streets continued to object to the plan, which sent it to the courts. With those cases settled, as well as Nether Providence resolving issues for a sliver of the property in its municipality, the plan starts anew. It is unclear what, if any, changes have been made to the original plan for the approximately 116-room facility.

While there were objections to the size of the building and potential traffic it would generate, many in the business community spoke in favor of the project on the basis of the borough’s economic vitality. All interested parties will ultimately have the opportunity for comment as the planning commission moves forward with the application.
